Skype problem again
« on: October 12, 2012, 09:32:10 AM »
Hello all
I have just set up my daughters pc using PCLos XFCE and my granddaughter asked me to install Skype.
I downloaded and installed from the repo and had the same problems as reported in other posts, ie. Start Skype, it logs her in and then disappears.
I then opened a terminal and tried by typing skype. Again Skype opened and immediately closed. The only message in the terminal was Aborted.
I followed the advice of a poster and created a Logs folder in the home folder. This made no difference.

I then followed the advice of another poster and created a file skype.sh containing the following lines:
#!bin/sh
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/lib41/vlicompat.so skype
I made this executable and ran the script.
I received a message Line2: 10944 aborted

I ran the script a further 3 times and received the same message except that the number changd.

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/lib41/vlicompat.so skype

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so   /usr/bin/skype

is the command and is for use where an older camera is to be used that is not UVC compliant.

Thanks for the reply.
The command that you gave was actually the one that I used, finger trouble when posting.

Have you fully updated the install?

What version of Skype did you install?

The point I was making is that the command is for use where there are problems displaying a web cam image ....  usually from an older webcam.

There are two packages for Skype in Synaptic:

1. skype-static which corresponds to version 2.2
2. skype which correspond to latest version 4.0.0.7

Which one did you install? Have you tried both?
