**Solved** SimpleBurn not seeing cd/DVD rw drive!
« on: October 11, 2012, 11:24:31 AM »
I have a sata cdrom/DVD multi recorder installed on my system. Upon boot SimpleBurn will recognize the drive and I can burn to media just fine. Once I insert a cd/DVD and open with PCManFM, SimpleBurn no longer sees the drive until I do a reboot. I am confused as to why SimpleBurn looses sight of the drive but PCManFM does not and am not sure how to troubleshoot the problem. Please any ideas?

By the way, I am running LXDE 2012.06 up to date and the kernel is 3.2.18-pclos2.bfs

Thanks,
lfever

edit: I believe this topic should be moved to Desktop hardware but don't know how to do so.

I am still looking for a solution to this problem  :(
I have tried different sata ports all with the same result.

The drive is a Liteon ATAPI iHAS424 and is recognized in PCC
as /dev/sr0

I have googled for several days and can find nothing that helps.
I would appreciate it greatly if someone could point me in the right direction
as how to trouble shoot this.

Thanks,
lfever

Hi T6,

Thanks for your reply. I haven't tried kernel 2.6.38.8.

I really like SimpleBurn as it has been very reliable for iso burns. I used brasero many
moons ago and it gave me a lot of bad burns but will try it again and see what happens.

T6,

After thinking about the last time I used brasero, I remember now that I was using a different distro.
I have installed brasero and so far it is working fantastic! I just burnt a couple of 2-3.5 GB iso files on dvd+r media and it worked great!!!  :) (Normally I use dvd-r but the +r was all I had on hand, bought by mistake  ;D)
I will giv it a couple of days and see how things go and if I have no trouble I will mark this solved.

Thanks again!

remember to do verification of what you burn

to discard problems with the discs and the burner itself, i had similar problems with a old lg burner and some samsung and princo discs but that was on windows, still some media can be problematic on certain hardware

lfever,
have you ever tried k3b?
it shows you the md5sum before iso burns that you can check if it is correct.

that is only useful when you are about to burn a iso and if you have the md5 file to check

some users had problems with k3b recently, last time i used it, it destroyed 3 dvds i burned so i stopped using it

some users still have good experiences with it, it has many great features but k3b is not what it used to be in the past, sometimes too much surprises  :-\

Hi T6 and twa,

twa, I have pclinuxos-kde-2012.08 on one of my linux boxes and use k3b on it but on this machine I am running lxde-2012.06 and don't want all the extras k3b install would pull in.

I tried the check integrity tool in brasero and was informed:

www.dropbox.com/s/6nyx9ryy6bxpg5h/integ.png?m

So I am using this method of checking md5sum of cd iso:

http://www.brunolinux.com/01-First_Things_To_Know/Md5sum_of_Burned_CDs.html

and so far all is well :)

Thanks again T6

T6,
maybe I'm a lucky man because I never had destroyed dvds/cds using k3b.
lfever,
thanks for the brunolinux link.

There was a short time during which K3b did not work correctly for some people.
But that time is long since past, IMO.
K3b has been updated several times since.

I've marked this post Solved but just wanted to add, I did't actually solve the problem with SimpleBurn. I have experimented some more with it and discovered that on my system it will work with ide drives, just doesn't seem to like sata. But as long as brasero is doing the job I can live without SimpleBurn   :)

Have you tried loading the proper driver for your SATA controller? Not knowing what your SATA controller is, it's hard to tell which driver that might be from here.

Hi Old-Polack,

My mobo has the nForce(-4X) chipset. In PCC under sata controllers: ‎CK804 Serial ATA Controller,Module: ‎sata_nv. Would this be correct?

Edit: Also my HDDs are both sata and working fine.

Thanks,
lfever
