"AMD Unsupported Hardware" AMD Radeon HD 7520G
« on: October 11, 2012, 09:40:08 AM »
Hello All:
I have an HP DV6 with AMD Radeon HD 7520G graphics card.
During the live cd session I am getting a watermark saying AMD unsupported hardware. Sure enough in PCC I don't see any such graphics card.
How might I resolve this in the live session? I don't want to install (dual boot with Win7) until I'm confident I can get things working properly.
Thanks,
Jim

By default liveCD is using the open source driver for AMD graphics cards. Maybe this is your problem.

Go to PCC -> Hardware -> Configure Video Card and select Radeon HD2000 or later (radeon/fglrx) as your driver.

You will be asked if you want to use the proprietary driver for your card. Select Yes and leave the default options.

You will be advised to reboot but since you are in a live session, press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace instead to restart X server.

Is your problem fixed?

Thanks! I followed your instructions but, unfortunately, the watermark is still there after logging back in.
Any other suggestions?

Are you sure? On my notebook with AMD APU E450, it seems to use fglrx.

I was pretty sure that by installing the proprietary driver for your graphics card would solve the issue.

What is the output of the fglrxinfo command in terminal?

That 7520G seems to be a part of the newer A6-4400M APU. May be support for that is enabled in a newer fglrx driver rather than the current repo version.

Please be patient. It should be resolved either by a updated graphics driver or by a newer kernel as was the experience in this other thread.

EDIT: It unfroze on its own!
Here is a photo of the output:

Which version did you use for your LiveCD?

It's strange because I haven't heard for this watermark issue for a while...

Well, I kinda sorted it out. Your laptop is equipped with one of the latest AMD APU's G-Series.

http://www.amd.com/us/products/embedded/processors/Pages/g-series.aspx

Catalyst 12.4 which is provided with PCLinuxOS 2012.08 can't support this APU (which was announced around June this year). You need Catalyst 12.6+

In the testing section of the repos, you can find Catalyst 12.8. You can try it like JohnW_57 suggested but do it at your own risk.

More info about the testing section can be found here:

Thank you so much for checking up on that! You really went out of your way, I really appreciate it.
I'll be patient and wait for the drivers.
Cheers,
Jim
