Video power settings
« on: October 10, 2012, 09:44:39 PM »

I like to leave my monitor on all the time, but since switching to the PASS server and subsequent update, I have not been able to.  I have looked in all the usual places but cannot find where to turn off the power down, sleep, hibernate, whatever and leave the monitor active all the time.

I have turned off all the "usual suspects" (Hardware/Power Management [do we really need 10 "New Activity" tabs?]) All buttons are unchecked or disabled.  But the video still powers down [either sleep or hibernate, both of which are unselected in all instances I can find) after about nine minutes.  (Makes me wonder why anyone would set up a screensaver.)

So, what am I missing?  Power settings are disabled, all tabs in Power Management Activities are set to "Don't use special settings."  Usually, that was enough to leave the monitor on.  But there is something, somewhere that is still putting the monitor in to sleep/hibernate.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Deb

Interesting,, the problem is usually the other way around.  :D

First off, the settings work in different ways under different Desktop Environments so, what Desktop Environment are you using?

From your posts, I assume you are referring to a desktop running on A/C power.

Please do a check in the Catalyst Control Centre under Powerplay for behaviour under A/C power.

If you still cannot get a solution, try setting the Switch off monitor setting under Power Management in Configure Your Desktop/System Settings to a very high value eg. 10000 min. and see if it works.

If all else fails, there is an application called Caffeine which will disable the power-saving settings.

Sling-shot, two questions:

            Catalyst Control Center??

            PowerPlay??

I know "System Settings" and "Control Center" but not "Catalyst Control Center."  Also neither "System Settings" nor "Control Center" have a "PowerPlay."

Ternor:

I have downloaded Caffeine, but from what I have seen in the past, it also locks the screensaver, right?

I will set the interval to something like 10,000 or whatever the highest setting is that I can find, but that is only a work around and not a true fix.

Thanks

Are you using the proprietary AMD Graphics driver?

If yes, then there is an application for changing the options of your graphics card called "Catalyst Control Center".
You will find it under More Applications -> Configuration.
PowerPlay is a set of technologies from AMD for reducing the power consuption of GPU's. You can set options for it via CCC.

If you are using the open source driver then the advice by sling-shot does not apply to you :)

Since your system specifications listed an AMD card, I assumed you were running the proprietary driver. Let me rephrase that ;)

Which graphics driver are you using for your AMD graphics card? In case you do use fglrx which is the proprietary driver and yet do not see Catalyst Control Centre in your menu, search and install the same using Synaptic.

Have you tried with the older kernel (2.6.38)?

Agmg and Sing-shot, I found Catalyst Control Center, but not Powerplay in it (I must just be overly dense this morning)

My current set up was running perfectly before I updated from PASS (about five or six days ago).  That update updated VLC (getting rid of numerous VLC apps and installing a new version of VLC) it also updated three or four libraries.  Since that time this problem has been there.  Is there any way to see what files I have downloaded from Synaptic?  That would at least give a place to start looking for the problem.

Ternor, as I thought, Caffeine disables the screensaver as well as the power settings.  While it will help when watching a video, it does not resolve the current problem of being unable to keep the monitor active all the time.

You can view the Synaptic history, provided you haven't told Synaptic to not keep history :) (Look in File menu in Synaptic)

These are the packages that were upgraded when I first accessed PASS, and lost my ability to keep the monitor powered up all the time

Upgraded the following packages:
choqok (1.2-1pclos2011) to 1.3-1pclos2012
gtkdialog (0.7.20-7pclos2011) to 0.8.2-1pclos2012
hdparm (9.37-1pclos2011) to 9.42-1pclos2012
libgcrypt11 (1.4.6-2pclos2010) to 1.5.0-1pclos2012
libjson-glib1.0_0 (0.12.4-1pclos2011) to 0.15.2-1pclos2012
libnotify4 (0.7.2-2pclos2011) to 0.7.5-1pclos2012
lomanager (3.6.1-1pclos2012) to 3.6.2-1pclos2012
vlc (1.1.13-1pclos2011) to 2.0.1-1pclos2012

Installed the following packages:
libdvbpsi6 (0.1.7-3pclos2012)

In this same session, all the VLC "plugin" packages were removed, but that should have no effect on the current problem.

dangbert,

Just a thought. Have you installed kde4-noblank? If not, try it.  It MAY resolve the issue (you'll find it in Synaptic).

The VLC package was updated ......  previously the plugins were separate packages, but for the latest version the plugins are included in the one 'VLC' package.
