[Solved] File associations - Thunderbird
« on: May 22, 2011, 05:37:15 PM »
One business I e-mail sends their bids as .tiff or .tif files. When I receive them I right click and choose "open". I have to save the file becasue my alternative is to "open with" QCad (default) which makes no sense. Under desktop configuration tiffs are associated with Okular (which would do) but I can't figure out any way to change this QCad (default) thing in Thunderbird.  Similarly opening .doc files. I want to open with Libre Office Writer but instead the "default" is set to Kwrite. Not in desktop configuration file associations but in TB.

I have the option to chose "other" but the "helper application window" opens my documents directory. Is there an applications location in Linux similar to a Programs directory in MS Windows? I don't know where to find all the various programs executable files otherwise or how to determine their paths.

I can't believe nobody knows the answer to this question. This is a big problem and  we need help from the folks who have this knowledge. Anyone know the answer to where to change file associations?
My problem is with .jpg's trying to be opened with Wincore.exe and I don't even use anything related to Microsoft at the present.  TIA to the soft hearted individual who helps out here.......  RCI

My bad. I figured it out and forgot to post the solution. Sorry. I had thought it was an OS setting but it's just a TB matter. Edit>Preferences>Attachments and choose what you want (at least it looks like that what I did - my memory "chip" - aka brain - seems to be undersized for the demands I put on the interface as the hardware - aka body- gets older)

I knew about that but it only gives me one choice for .jpeg's and that's Wine core.exe. If I pick "other" it takes me to the file manager which doesn't do me any good...... so I'm still in the dark about this. It's just hard for me to understand why none of the experts has a solution to this problem. Thanks for the reply, glad you got your problem solved..........

You're right. I forgot this step.
Chose "other" and drill your way to usr/bin. Lots of program there, Gimp, Gwenview, etc... This should handle your .jpg problem.
I associated my tiffs to Gwenview from TB and I think PCLOS uses Gwenview as the default for .jpgs
