I thought the OP said that other OSs read the disk OK.

So the question is:  does that mean other OSs running on the SAME hardware ?  ;)

My optical drives are in PCC  (hardware ->check hardware) as sr0 and sr1.
Be sure the name of the drive(s) in vlc settings is/are correct!
/dev/sr0 or /dev/sr1 for me.

JohnW

VLC has a terrible habit of going to default settings after
an update.   Just one little change could do it.

If you find out what codec we're trying to play let us know.
Can't be Theora, I don't think XP will play it.

edit:    clicking on disc info on a program that does play the
DVD should identify the exact codec.

The OS's are on separate machines.  XP and Mint are on the backup box and PCLinuxOS is on my main box.  I just tried to run a commercially prepared DVD and it would not read and gave the following message

[dangbert]
You have not said which version of PCLinuxOS you have chosen to re-install? I think it could be 2012.08 KDE but please clarify for sure.

You have said that the disk plays fine on other machine with different OS/distribution. And that the same machine played it in the past.
As Bald Brick said in a post above, it could be a failure on the part your DVD lens (most common reason I believe) on your current re-installed PCLinuxOS machine.
This may be ascertained by trying a data DVD as opined by Just17

VLC is supposed to play media independent of any external codecs. So that is unlikely to be the reason. And the initial error thrown by VLC as you said earlier was VLC cannot set the DVD's title. It possibly cannot decrypt the entire disc which might indicate a problem with decrypting the DVD.

What message pops out when you insert the DVD into your PCLinuxOS machine? And once you have done and verified that it does not play, could you please check these directories and see what is seen there?

The kernel is 3.2.18 pae-bfs.
Have you used/tried a different kernel?I have in the past encountered issues with hardware not operating as it did previous to upgrading to a different kernel.Sometimes a later kernel fixes the problem or reverting back to the earlier version.

Just17 nailed it.  libnav4 and libdvdread3 were NOT installed by default, I installed them and both drives are reading both the DVD-vr and the commercial DVD

Sling-shot, the version was 2012-8

Thanks for all of you for your help and patience.

"So, with other systems able to read the disk, the problem is not with the disk, which leaves PCLinuxOS."

Aren't you sorry that you jumped to conclusions and blamed PCLinuxOS ???

YouCanToo, not really.  Because the problem WAS PCLinuxOS, in that needed files were not installed by default.  But not being a person who knows what bit of hardware needs what supporting files.  I could have searched all day long and never have found what was missing.  You, and the others, who are very familiar were able to tell me what was missing.  But only after I highlighted the fact that the system was not working as it should.

What do I think of PCLinuxOS?  Simply that it is the best distro out there and I have no intention of going anywhere else, or failing to to highly recommend it to any and all who are looking for an OS.  That does not mean that there are not, sometimes, things that need tweaking, as in the current instance.   But when those arise, the expertise on the Forum is awesome.

Some dvd applications are restricted  by some countries law and could not pre-installed on a distribution.
Guess that's the reason why it's not installed by default!

"YouCanToo, not really.  Because the problem WAS PCLinuxOS, in that needed files were not installed by default.  But not being a person who knows what bit of hardware needs what supporting files"

the files that you required are not distributed with the distro for a reason, this is not pclinux, this is pclinux following the rules

we talked a couple years ago about libdvdcss, libdvdnav, win32 codecs and similar stuff and why it doesn't come with the livecd, ideally it should come in the livecd but in some parts of the world it can't for legal reasons

since pclinux is offered everywhere, we follow rules, other distros doesn't do that, this is why pclinux is how it is and other distros are not pclinux

Sure thing. Blame PCLinuxOS. We can't win it all. Neither do every single distro. We all have our little flaws and we all have our little "WOW"s. If it is not one thing, it has to be another.

Still, as the a few of the members who replied and assisted, we believe your SUBJECT is inappropriately misleading and inaccurate. Kindly do something about it.

Hello Deb,

libdvdnav as well as libdvdread in fact are already installed on the 2012.08 DVD iso. Could it be that you use the 2012.08 MiniME iso where those 2 files are not installed because that iso is intended for advanced users who know what is needed to get their system they way they want it to function?

The subject line reads much better now. And I'm sure we're all glad that the solution was simple as installing a couple of packages. Good to know you're sorted.

No, I always go for the full version.  As to the "why" of their not being installed by default on my system, I am the first  to admit that is way above my pay grade.  :-)

The good news is, the gurus who inhabit the Forum, did think of it and got the system up and running as it should be.

Sometimes when you uninstall an application Synaptic removes away some other items with it. Could it be you removed them without noticing they are going to be removed?
