System logs out user without user input!

Have just recently had my KDE desktop (fully updated) suddenly logout. It happened last night and then again this morning. Both times the system suddenly froze and then promptly logged me out. No error messages came up before or anything else that gives me a clue to what is happening. Obviously it is a bit of a pain as each time I lose the work I am doing and then have to spend time re-opening everything.

Anyone have any ideas where I can look to find out why this is happening?

I think that KDE has an option in Power Settings to automatically log out after some time of inactivity. Maybe this is your case?

being kicked out to the log in screen means X is crashing.

Being kicked back to the log in screen is an improvement from back in the days when X would crash and you will be sent to a black on white terminal with very ugly looking crash report with no apparent way out  :D

There are various threads on the forum that discuss this issue.

can you copy and paste the "Device" section of the "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" text file?

Are you running on a two monitro setup?

do you have "prelink" package installed?

Does this card have 3D hardware acceleration capability? if yes, are you using them?

At the risk of jinxing my system, the problem I was having seems to have stopped.  I installed my the mini 2012-08 iso.  I noticed on two occasions (that I am sure of) that the log out occurred when I moved the mouse pointer up the screen.  So, I changed a setting in Configure Desktop > Hardware > Input Devices > Mouse : Advanced tab.  For all I know that has nothing to do with the issue.  I reduced Pointer Acceleration from 2.0 to 1.6.

I had previously run XFdrake and disabled translucency but I wasn't using compositing anyway so that probably has nothing to do with it.  There is at least one setting in XFdrake which relates to the mouse.

Will the logs show any clue?

Thanks for all the suggestions.

muungwana - I am using an external monitor for the laptop when at my workstation, but turn off the laptop screen when using the external. Prelink is not installed. The card is running with 3D hardware acceleration

ternor - will check out changing pointer acceleration. Went through the thread and will try the nouvea option. Am using the latest pae kernel.

sling-shot - I checked the various logs and couldn't find any errors (searched with grep using the word 'error' so let me know if there are any other keywords I should look out for.

The problem with this issue is that it is intermittent so even if it gets solved, it will be difficult to work out what solved it!

Well that was an exercise in frustration. Tried out the Nouvea driver, but Xorg wouldn't load. Quick google shows that the Nvidia 4200 isn't supported. Unfortunately my backup xorg.conf file wasn't the latest so had to get an xorg.conf from a live-USB. Then I couldn't remember which drivers I was supposed to use. Ended up using 'Nvidia GeForce 400 series and later', which is fine, bar one thing. Upon booting to the login screen there is no visible login box, just the login background. I think the screen is set at the wrong resolution (or it has issues displaying the login box), either way I can login by typing username / password. Once logged in, everything is perfect, but would like to sort out the login screen. Any ideas or should I start another thread as this is getting a bit off topic....

you posted the contents of your working "xorg.conf" in this thread, why not use that one instead of the one from a live usb?

after you have everything hopefully back to the way they were, post contents of "/var/log/xorg.0.log.old" immediately after you have been logged off.

The content of the file holds contents of the previous X session and should have logs in it on why the previous X instance crashed.

It will also be useful if you also notice what program you were using when you where logged out.You could, for example, notice that you got logged off when you started a particular program,or when you did something with a particular program.

Everything is back up and working perfectly now - thanks muungwana. Although if I exit from the boot splash I get a weird comment - "cannot open file delete" - any ideas?

I tried to post the contents of the log, but there was 195,000 lines so couldn't add it. Have instead posted the last 100 odd lines. Let me know if I can search the log for anything:
