I am working on a friends Gateway Laptop and decided to set it up to dual boot with PCLOS since she has a batch of teenage daughters using it and it is just a matter of time until XP gets corrupted.

The thin is that when I tell it to shut down while in PCLOS, it goes back to the normal gateway power on boot screen and after a bit brings up the grub menu.

If I tell it to shut down from XP, it powers down as it should.

Where should I be looking for the problem.

This is the kind of problem I would not even worry about if it were my machine but it sets a bad example when I am trying to gain converts.

First thing I would try is disabling ACPI in the boot sequence in GRUB.

I'd also suggest checking the BIOS settings for power management and the like.  My guess is that it's a quirk with the power management on that laptop.
