Installing Abiword from cached rpm package
« on: October 04, 2012, 03:16:47 PM »
Hi

I´m using PCLinuxOS Education (I think it´s based on 2011 PCLinuxOS).  I have a few computers in my school lab. The head network administrator is not in favour of my using Linux. But I feel that I am getting much mor out of the computers that way. Now the computers are rather old - I used to run PCLinuxOS 2009 - they will not run the later versions. I found  PCLinuxOS Education and want to use it be that lacks a Word Processor. At home I can use Synpatic to set up AbiWord but at school this seems to be blocked.
I do not want to ask the admin for help! I´m trying to do this myself. At home I have used Synpatic to download the files - I have abiword-2.8.6-3pclos2011 rpm package. I by using a usb key have installed the files on my PC (At school ) here: /var/cache/apt/archeves

How do I install from here. I´m stuck. I´m sorry I know so little about inux.

best wishes,

Keli

i don't know if abiword is only 1 package but if it is and you know the name of the package open konsole on the same folder you have the file

write su and press enter, then write your root password

in there write rpm -i thenameofthepackage.rpm

if it can be installed directly, it will and you will be able to use it, if it needs more packages, it could tell you which ones are

Did you try Synaptic to see if it made it available to you?
