Crazy booting on TOSHIBA Laptop ( Solved )
« on: October 03, 2012, 03:29:53 PM »
Toshiba C665D-S5518 laptop with WIN7
Installing 2012.8 KDE

Sometime ago I tried to install 2012.2 on it. Popped  the disc in rebooted out of Win and it everything worked when I booted to the live CD, wireless, sound and video. Then I installed it on the laptop with the desktop installer, went thru the process normally. It would not boot up on restart to the desktop, froze up. I think it may have been video card related, not sure. So I put it on hold till after summer.

I tried to install it again yesterday(2012.8) and I found out if I reboot from Windows to PCLinuxOS ,warm boot, works great, wireless, desktop everything. If I try to start from a cold boot the computer locks up. Usually when the displays shows the the 4 icons at the bottom of the booting screen.

I tried several ways of installing using Safe boot, Safe Video, and Text and it always locks up if you install from a cold boot. I installed it from a win reboot  and everything works now IF I reboot from win and select PCLinuxOS on the reboot. Cold boot it locks up. Something must be getting set on the motherboard  during the Win boot that is not set during LINUX  boot or the order of initializing must be different.

I tried installing a couple of older versions 2010, 2009 and they installed ok but the some of hardware was newer and is not supported in the these versions.

RealtekRTL8188CE wireless
Conexant Smart Audio HD
AMD Radeon HD 6310 HD

Any ideas?

Read something in passing (Check in this forum)  that Win7 "wakes up" certain hdwr and that's why the warm boot works but not the cold boot from pclos.

Would not surprise me if MS only wants its own drivers activating / accessing certain hdwr.

Try setting the network boot as the first option in BIOS .....  yes it delays the POST by a few seconds ...  but has been reported to work on some hardware in threads on this forum.

Just17.... I set to network boot and IT WORKS . Boots from a cold boot to PCLinux, no errors no lockups. Now to configure everything my way. Thanks for the tip!
