I also hate the cashew.  Also this business of "ACTIVITIES" seems to me to  be a solution in search of a problem.  With up to 20 virtual desktops, and different widgets on each what does 'activities' do for me? I have dragged the upper-right cashew where it is behind my task bar and out of sight.  Just for housekeeping I just right clicked on my desktop and found about 100 "new activities" there.  Surely these are consuming some kind of resource.  I have no idea how these are being created or how to get rid of them except one by one.

How can I prevent these being created?  I'm not aware of anything that I am doing to create them

Just to clarify my position with Windows.
My live dvd is not a remaster all I have done is change what Icons appear on the desktop
As Example I did away with other web browsers leaving only Firefox . Those web browsers can still be accessed via the main applications menu.
I put SAKIS script , Umtsmon, and Kppp icons on desktop (in the trays or whatever you call them. Virtualbox is not installed iether it has to be installed using synaptic.
I prefer to keep as much on the DVD as I can to impress people with how many possibilities are available on PCLOS and that DVD is already maxed out.

A few people asked me to help and because they did not have disks I made an XP installatin for them using my own. Just to correct  another wrong impression. These people do not have disks because non are supplied with the PC.  A big part of the PC market is families who buy a PC for use at home. They buy it in a box at big group stores where you pay your money at the till and walk away with a box. When you unpack it and plug it in Windows is already installed. They look at me in amazement when I ask for the widows disk. They buy the computer at a price which correctly says windows is installed. One of my people felt that he had payed for windows so he should have a disk and he went off and demanded it. Its a long story but he never got it.They demanded he pay for it, he was pleased to have my help,

South Africa has very powerfull consumer protection laws and I think Microsoft would be very foolish to try and attack, the man I helped or me over the issue. Under our law the big store who supplied it would have to pay for the instalable disk.
I am take great delight in showing people that Open Office is better than the windows offering for which they have to pay  The equvalent of  USD150
Just a pity that Kaddressbook/Kmail is such a mess but I have just discovered Evolution which does everything Kontact does and i am working on that now. I will uninstall Kmail etc and remaster to include Evolution installed and running with an Icon on screen 1 (internet)
Anyway  PclinuxOS is in no way connected to what I and the man I give a DVD to do.

As long as you're careful with how you bundle what is on the DVD, and follow the PCLinuxOS -
Can I distribute a remastered version of PCLinuxOS?
and:

*** Notice to all would be remaster creators ***

Quote
Officially sanctioned remasters will be hosted at ibiblio and the mirrors that sync to ibiblio,
they will be listed on the "get PCLinuxOS" page at the main site.
They will also have the full support of the forum.

It is important to note this does not effect personal remasters, and should anybody wish to
remaster for redistribution they can do so, as long as they remove all reference to PCLinuxOS.
The phrase "based on PCLinuxOS" or "derived from PCLinuxOS" may be used, if such remasters do
not create any controversy for PCLinuxOS.

What follows is a non-exhaustive list of the minimal expectations

I suggest reading those Five points, "a non-exhaustive list of the minimal expectations";  just to make sure you aren't upsetting the intention of the creators of PCLinuxOS.

Once we install a PClinucOS flavour on our own personal Comps we can basically go wild customizing to our hearts content.

Main issue is redistribution as I see it.

The Cashew ? I like it, it gives a surreal expectation to the KDE Desktop.  ;D

We are so spoilt by our wonderful Devs, and Community that as said already people are working on making 'The Cashew' - no more !  ;)
llewellyn , I personally greatly respect your intention in promoting PCLOS.
As a lot of us have found in our own journey helping people with fixing, or Installing an OS for a 'Friend OR Family member', it can be more trouble than it's worth down the track.
Example; in a month, a year in the Future, "You've totally screwed up my Computer ! If you don't fix it I'll never talk to you again !"
Or worse !

In a comercial situation as a Technician with a registered business no one can complain as there is a legal agreement for the work done.

Good luck Mate !  ;D

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,108913.msg930987.html#msg930987

Pinoc's solution doesn't work for me.  When I put the script into autostart, it does wipe out any new activities, but it also sets my desktop background to black, instead of my chosen wallpaper.l

Thanks for the warning Tony but for me it comes too late. On the other hand these are not family or friends. It all started with me giving away disks to total strangers. Word of mouth brought requests and in the end I gave out  130 plus. I note that the cashew should not be a problem except that the sort of people I am giving disks to are not interested in the finer points of personalizing the desktop. Full Monty is really  not for the more serious user. Such a person would be better off with the basic straight KDE version. I quickly realised that Full Monty is a wonderful tool for the sort of person who just buys a pc except that the cashew makes it vulnerable for this sort of user
I am going to investigate and learn how to connect to a troubled users PC over the net and try fix trouble without leaving my chair at home. This forum will be full of my questions while I learn that

Yes, it is. You listed the changes you made before creating your liveDVD. By making those changes you have altered the original and therefore created your own remaster.

Notice:
Do not include any MS product with any remastered copy of PCLinuxOS. This is illegal in the US. PCLinuxOS is based in the US and is subject to US law, regardless of where in the world the remaster is distributed. If your action is legal in South Africa but illegal in the US, you can still get us in legal difficulties. Do not include anything in your remaster for which PCLinusOS does not have redistribution permission/license.

I recommend you read/study about remastering (previously linked to) thoroughly. Let me repeat here -- modifying Full Monty and creating a liveDVD with the modifications included is remastering, and when you hand out those DVDs, you are distributing the remaster.

Yes, it is. If the name PCLinuxOS, its logo or its mascot (Dobie the bull) is included anywhere in your remaster, then we are connected. Read the link about remastering for distribution. This is clearly explained there.

I would like to re assure Neal Manbear and others on the team that I will not bundel anything that does not originate from PClinuxOS Repositories onto a PClinuxOS cd or DVD.
I and friends use Virtualbox, which PCLOS makes available, to do things after we have installed PCLINUX but the same could be done with VirtualB  from any other distro. I can even tell a windows user that he can download VB from the net himself.

Perhaps you would consider making some small changes to the presentaion of  the standard version of  Full Monty so that I would not need to chnage anything before making new live boot DVDs

A separate box added to screen I (internet) named  ' connection tools´  which has icons for Sakis3G Kppp and Umtsmon. These make it possible to immediately set up internet connections using the means that are easily available anywhere.

addition of 3 icons in editors on Desktop2   ´Office´  being Celtx (screenplay editor)
and LYX. and Libre Office start center  . These demonstrate immediately the power of Linux over  MS Office.

But most important of all is guarding  Full Monty from the damage that can be done to it simply by clicking accidentally on the  Cashew. When I first started with PClinuxOS My desktops completely disaapeared many times and  for a newby it was a huge problem to get them back. Yes they were still there of course but no longer visible even after reboot from a harddrive installation.
Off the livecd such a thing could be fised simply by rebooting so the disaster happened only after PClos had been fully installed to the computer.
It is not just the Cashew though. Right click on any desktop and you get access to ´activities´. with similar result. It would be better if the user has to enter password to make any changes in these two places.
An ordinary KDE installation would not need this but Full Monty desktops are special and need protecting.

Sorry guys I am not criticizing your work, It has made it possible to easily show the superiority of LINUX to idiots ,just needs some safeguards from idiots.

llewellyn,

how about you calm down a bit here, ok?

First of all, FullMonty is a one-man-project. While I am definitely open for suggestions I will not do customised editions. Linux and especially KDE, is about learning and customising the system to your needs and taste. So go ahead and do just that. If anyone, you, or your friends, have problems with the cashew because it is used incorrectly then this is a user-problem. Even without the cashew, there are many ways you can mess up the desktop or the system. Learning by doing, or learning by messing up and fixing, the choice is up to you. Both ways are interesting.

Again, KDE is highly configurable. I would't call the users idiots, maybe it is just the lack of information they need to be provided, or simply curiosity killed the cat?

So, now I will finish hidethecashew, a customised script I do for you, or should I say the for the too-curious-Linux-user?

Pinoc from your reply I can see that you still have not understood how special your Full Monty Creation is.
It takes Linux out of the realm of a scary OS for experts and puts it out there as a direct head on competitor for Windows. Ask any one out in the field selling PCś and they will tell you that the great majority of PC buyers/users are IDIOTS. Windows succeeded with them because they are so stupid and MS makes a great effort to make things easy.

What happens though when they click in wrong places is that the 6 full Monty screens become invisible and That demoralizes them and I do not want them going back to using windows before they have had some time to learn.
I am pleased that of 130 disks FM disks given away I got 60 calls to help and  all of them were because FM had become invisible. I went there fixed it and then gave more warnings about touching the wrong places. all these calls for help came within days of them doing a full installation of FM. Full Monty is not just a highly configureable desk top , It is a fantastic tool for getting people to change to PClinuxOS. People who come over from Windows do not really want so much configure ability, after all no other oS gives them that. They want to Click on Icons and run exciting programs. The strength of FM for the new user is the huge number and range of programs it puts in front of them, easily accessible.
By the way all of them found the actual process of installation very very easy, a factor for which you must take full credit. At last we have a Linux which is just as easy as windows to install. Synaptic and the rolling updates is as good or better than what MS offers.
A password to stop them inadvertently making changes to the desktop would make FM the ultimate. OS.
You would not believe the power of word of mouth I gave away 3 DVD and all the rest were requests generated by word of mouth specially from the youth. At the same time it was only a matter of days before that Cashew made Full Monty inexplicably disappear. The users could not even guess how it happened, they did not even remeber clicking on something.
Please start thinking of your creation as a special OS and if you can make concessions to idiots and protect it from inadvertent use of the reconfigurability feature with a password.

I need to add to my last very long post.
Hiding the cashew will be a pretty good safeguard.
That cashew sits in the top right hand corner of the screen exactly where that little x that is used to close programs and screens resides. I am not sure but it seems very likely that this close proximity is why they  keep clicking the cashew unintentionally.

Pinoc thankyou,
I have installed the RPM toggelcashew. installation was easy and fast
I did every test I could think of with cashew on and cashew off.
I rebooted , I simply unplugged the power and tried every other way to confuse the setting.

Toggelcashew works perfectly.
When cashew is toggeled to hide cashew a small image appears at top of desktop 1 (Internet)
but not on the other desktops.
That image produces a tooltip display  about TOOLBOX but clicking has no effect
It does not sit in the usual top corner but about 3 inches to left of top corner.
Do not do anything about it please because when its like that I will know the  cashew has been toggeled  to off
If I do not see it there I will immediately know cashew is on.

I left off info in last post

the small image I mention looks like cashew but small with the word Full Monty next to it 3 inches from far right edge  at top of screen
Clicking does nothing hovering the mouse pointer produces tool tip   saying Too;box etc but it is harmless.
It does not appear on any of the other desktops.
On my personal system I have increased desktops to 10
Various kinds, in fact every kind possible cashew toggel has no Ill effect on any of them. I have tested and tested to make sure
Again thank you Pinoc.
