protecting the Cashew etc
« on: October 01, 2012, 08:15:41 AM »
Full Monty is for me a wonderful tool for introducing Linux to new users. The range of software capability introduced so nicely ,gives me the opportunity to show how our Linux gives better ways to do things for EVERYBODY.
I made a live boot dvd which incorporates a few changes I made Visa vis program icons on some of the Fullmonty desktops .As example I did away with Chromium and Opera and put other things there instead like Kppp, Sakis and umtsmon. These last three make it quick and easy for me to show how easy it is to get onto the web. I show how even a small cheap cellphone can give lowcost access to the web.

I  found a supply of DVDs of good quality   R2.00 each (USD 0.25) so I have been giving away copies at the rate of three to four a day. I have already given away about 130.
Many of these people get very keen and install Fullmonty within days but then a few days later I get a call for help. What they are all doing is clicking on the  CASHEW and shortly thereafter the Full monty desktop is in a mess or gone altogether .  Otherwies they right click on the desktop and Fidel  with ACTIVITIES . It is always a catastrophe .
Please can someone help me make  changes so that accessing any of above requires the entry of Root Password ??. I have tried giving warning when I give the DVD to someone but as I am going after family home use computers where the whole family gets access to all the clever stuff  available through PClinuxOS there is always one or other who clicks in the wrong place.
I cannot bring myself to refuse to help so I am in a real jam now and have had to stop promoting and giving away disks.

Isn't there an widget that removes that darn thing?   You might try hiding it behind your panel if nothing else works.  That is what I ended up doing.

Yes, there is a widget that hides the Cashew, but it only hides it.
One can still right click on the desktop and unlock widgets.

To install the widget that hides the cashew - right click on the desktop>unlock widgets
then right click on the desktop again>add widgets>Get New Widgets>Download New Plasma Widgets
in the Search Box type cashew.

The desktop Cashew can be hidden using the Py-Cashew 1.1  Plasmoid Script  which can installed via the Add Widget > Download Widget method

http://opendesktop.org/content/show.php?content=147892

And there is Stealth Cashew 0.5 which again can be installed via the Add Widget route.

It (the widget) shows up also in my widgets listing but when dragging it to the desktop the error I posted earlier pops up.  I did some searching and see that I am not the only one that has had this experience, though I have not found a solution for it listed.

I finally installed an RPM from outside the repository called "plasmoid-ihatethecashew-0.4-4.18.i586.rpm" from this address http://software.opensuse.org/search?q=cashew&baseproject=openSUSE%3A12.1&lang=en&include_home=true&exclude_debug=true

Upon installing it, I went to add widgets and dragging it to the desktop, the cashew dissipated.  As always I do not recommend installing software from outside the repository, but this worked fine for me. YMMV

Sounds like a candidate for a package request. :)

A src rpm is definitely needed. But, I am sure that the source is out there. ;)

Like I said I had not found it. But in all honesty, I did not spend much time looking for it either.

I downloaded the Py-cashew widget and then went to 'Add Widget' ....  double clicked on it and the cashew disappeared from my desktop.

To get back the cashew, I uninstalled the widget, logged out and back in again ....  the panel icon did not display properly when the cashew was 'lost' hence the uninstall method ...

@ llewellyn, it's a hard lesson to learn, but in "Computing 101":
1.a)'Encouraging Computer Users for fun'; we are reminded that it is a fatal error to encourage people to use a Computer for which you could well be pestered, or even be held responsible; for the rest of your natural life.  :D  ;)
