Desktop quick-switch
« on: October 01, 2012, 10:44:37 AM »
Is there a way (keystroke, shortcut, etc.) to switch from within an application to the desktop ? For instance, I am browsing in FireFox (full-screen)... and I want to launch another application whose icon is on the desktop; can I go directly to the desktop or must I minimize all the other apps I have open ?

Forgive me for using the "W" word  :-[ but in "Windows" you just hold the Windows-key and hit the "D" key (it's a toggle... do it again and you're back where you were).

I tried a Google search and could not find the answer for PCLOS.

If you are using KDE and have the Show the Desktop widget installed you can right click on it and go to Show Desktop Settings and add a custom keyboard shortcut

Alt+Tab should show any application(s) that are open but  I'm unsure if that shows the desktop itself

If you are using full-screen mode for Firefox and the taskbar is not showing, then you need to use F11 to escape full-screen mode, then click the "Show the Desktop" icon.

... then click the "Show the Desktop" icon.

I think that Icon is exactly what I'm looking for. Where is it ? Or must I create one myself ?

On KDE it may already be on the panel near the KMenu/App launcher - if it's not right click on the desktop and choose Add Widget, and look for Show Desktop - when found simply double click on it and will drop in the panel. You can then move it somewhere suitable

In 4.8.3 the widget is contained in the package kde-plasma-addons.

Tovian:

Are you aware that you can have up to 20 virtual desktops, so that you can also do what you ask by simply clicking on any desktop not in immediate use?

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

You can also set keyboard shortcuts for switching virtual desktops under "Configure my Desktop"  >> Keyboard shortcuts

Thanks to everyone for all the useful information.

I could not find a way to mark this thread "solved" so I guess it's up to the mods to do that.
