copy and print part of mixed text/graphics SOLVED!
« on: September 30, 2012, 02:40:04 PM »
Sometimes an Internet search lands a multi-page file of mixed text and graophics.  (A typical example: Instructions using a series of illustrations.)  Now it may be that you don't want the whole
file, since it may include items you're not interested in, or perhaps comments from dozens of users, etc. It is possible to use the mouse to highlight part of the file, but how to print it? WordPerfect
would allow you to paste the whole thing in, but some Linux word processors only show an outline of the illustration of a Window box; Textmaker just ignores the illustrations altogether..  Have tried
GIMP, but it says there is no image. Have tried a batch of graphics programs, but most do not let you paste in something--some only work with an existing image file.  Doing this with KSnapshot, a
page at a time is a real pita, but the only answer I have found.   As a specific instance:
                  http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/19249/how-to-assign-a-static-ip-address-in-xp-vista-or-windows-7/
I want to print out the Win 7 and XP (only) portions of this instruction, with the graphics. It's not always a question of saving paper and inks, but saving time also, since color printing takes time.

Why don't I do this in Windows with WordPerfect?  I'm having a network printer problem at the moment! (Which leads me to the static IP situation!)

Thanx for any ideas here.  --doug

Print to a PDF file from the browser, then use a PDF viewer to print only those pages or selections you're interested in.

Fantastic!  I never knew you could print to pdf from Firefox! What a tremendous idea!  Thank you!

I see this is solved but it can be even better.

LibreOffice Draw can now edit PDF reasonably well, get rid off those extra pages at the end, select and move stuff around.
Export back to PDF for viewing later, save that paper and ink.

I usually save a web page of info I want as a html this gives you a folder
and a html file. I then open the htlm file in libreoffice and edit out what I don't want then
export as a pdf file which 90% of the time is placed on my nook to read when I'm at my doctors appointments. Seeing I have 6 doctors I spend a lot of time away from home and on
appointments.

RE-solved!

Here I am again!  I discovered that you can highlight and paste into Libre Office 3.5 Writer a text-plus-graphics cut, like in WordPerfect.  This is even better than saving as a pdf.  I don't usually use LO,
because frankly, I don't like it, but this may change my mind.

And then you could use calibre to convert the  pdf to the Nook native epub fomat....   :o
