The Device URI is completely incorrect for your printer, as socket:// is for a network (connected by ethernet) printer but, please correct me if I'm wrong, yours is a parallel printer.

Yes, that is correct.  It is a parallel printer.  How do I go about correcting this?

Run hp-toolbox from a terminal and post the output.

The first time I ran this I got this:

[buck@localhost ~]$ hp-toolbox

[buck@localhost ~]$

A box (Refreshing Device List - HP Device Manager) came up telling me there were no installed HP devices found with three methods as to how to set up a new device.  Then at the bottom, it says, "Note: Only devices installed with the hp: or hpfax: CUPS backend will appear in the Device Manager."  There it gives me three options: 1.  Set up device . . ., 2.  CUPS Web Interface, and 3.  Close.  When I closed that box and re-ran "hp-toolbox" I just got this:

[buck@localhost ~]$ hp-toolbox

And I get a black cursor and nothing else happens.

It appears that your user does not have any group membership because my output shows .....
--------------
| PERMISSION |
--------------

groups          user-groups                    Required        -        -        OK       user sys disk lp wheel floppy tape cdrom usb cdwriter audio video dialout users apache usbmux machines mpd pulse-access mysql polkituser fuse vboxusers[/color][/s]

For some reason, the rest of this does not show up, but I did go in and add 'lp' to my user group.

Sorry, only now realised the hp-check was run as root and not as user ........  :(

Does this matter?  I ran per German Tux's suggestion.

The first time around, when you had the HP Device Manager up and running, you should have selected "1. Set up device . . ."
Try running hp-toolbox again and see if you can get the HP Device Manager to run and, if you can, proceed with "1. Set up device . . ." and see what happens.

After adding 'lp' to my group membership, I ran 'hp-check' as user, and this seems to be corrected.

Per my statement above, here is a portion of the 'hp-check'

HP-DeskJet-722C
---------------
Type: Unknown
Device URI: socket://HP:9100
PPD: /etc/cups/ppd/HP-DeskJet-722C.ppd
PPD Description: HP DeskJet 722C Foomatic/pnm2ppa
Printer status: printer HP-DeskJet-722C disabled since Fri 05 Oct 2012 05:22:33 PM EDT -    Unable to locate printer 'HP'!
warning: Printer is not HPLIP installed. Printers must use the hp: or hpfax: CUPS backend for HP-Devices.

| PERMISSION |
--------------

groups          user-groups                    Required        -        -        OK       buck lp floppy cdrom cdwriter audio video dialout users polkituser

Is the warning in red of significance?  I keep seeing this when I try to install printer.  I just tried to install it again through PCC with the same outcome.  It won't let me 'enable' when I right click on the printer icon and select >properties>policies.

Searched in Synaptic for HP Drivers and all packages seem to be there.
Is pnm2ppa installed?

OK, let's tackle this from a different angle.
Have you tried to install the printer with the CUPS Web Interface, as suggested by @Phil and @kalle123

batzilla,
I see that hplip is installed but this alone is not sufficient
check in synaptic and confirm you have installed cups and task-printing-hp
When an issue has been resolved for you, please edit the original post to include <SOLVED> in the title. This provides a good indicator for users with a similar problem to check out the thread.

Yes, pnm2ppa is installed.

All the CUPS packages are installed and task-printing-hp is installed.  I've also run an update, so things should be up to date.

I know I've seen that somewhere, but I don't remember where.  How do I use the CUPS Web Interface?  I don't see it in PCC.

OK, duh! ;D  How about localhost:631?  I'm trying, but I'm having trouble.  It first asked me for a username and password, which I did.  When I clicked on "add a printer" I got a Printer Error: Unable to add printer: Forbidden.  I'm wondering if I possibly gave a wrong username, but I can't get it to ask me for one again.

It's interesting.  At the localhost:631 website, there are NO HP DeskJets mentioned.  There's a bazillion LaserJets, but no DeskJets.   >:(  Actually, when I go to Administration>Printers>Find New Printers, it says there are none!!??

batzilla,
I have gone through many Linux distros and always had only HP printers.
On all the distros I have tried the HP printer always worked out of the box.
Actually I'm running PCLOS LXDE 32bit as main system ad this is what I have installed in synaptic:
hplip
hplip-common
hplip-gui
hplip-hpijs
hplip-libs
cups
cups-common
cups-drivers-foo2zjs
I do NOT have installed system-config-printer.
Re localhost:631....never used
I would suggest to remove completely hplip including configuration files and reinstall it again
then from terminal:
Code: [Select]
su -c hp-setup

I am unsure if these are applicable but this is something I would try.

lsmod | grep lp

which should give a response similar to this

Code: [Select]
lp                      7041  0
parport                25179  3 lp,parport_pc,ppdev

Do the same for  ppdev

lsmod | grep ppdev

which should give similar to this

Code: [Select]
ppdev                   4821  0
parport                25179  3 lp,parport_pc,ppdev

and

lsmod | grep par

Code: [Select]
parport_pc             28439  0
parport                25179  3 lp,parport_pc,ppdev

If any of the modules in the responses above do not show up then please try loading them.

To load a required but missing module, su to root in a terminal and use the following command ...

modprobe lp
modprobe ppdev
modprobe parport
modprobe parport_pc

etc.

Then try setting up the printer again, and if successful the module/s will need to be loaded at boot by adding them to the list in the  /etc/modprobe.preload  file.

Warning:   I do not have a parallel port printer to test with, so the above is a bit of guessing on my part,  so please take the above in that light  ;)
