BTW, that is an old printer.  They stop producing those things over twelve years ago.  Congrats for keeping it running for so long.

I bought a 720C in 1999 and, for all intents and purposes, it's the same as the 722C. IIRC, it cost me in excess of GBP200 but it was the best printer I ever had. Unfortunately, I could never get it to work on Linux, as it was what's known as a "Windows printer" and the HPLIP folks never released a driver for it.

I bought a G55 ....  cannot recall how long ago ....  but would suspect the late 80s to early 90s .....  and I retired it last December ....  was too big for my setup ....  so bought a cheap HP 3050 ....  much smaller and lighter and wireless.
The G55 was still working when I retired it.
I doubt the present piece of light plastic will last long ......  but at the price I don't care .....

PCC recognizes a cups-pdf generic printer, but it doesn't print anything.  And it won't give me any other options.  I also have an HP Officejet 4500 that is wifi, but I can't set it up either.
When you go into the Configure printing and scanning section of PCC, do you see the Add button up in the top left-hand corner.

-- Eddie

Yes, the add button is there.  That's what I've been using.

Try using hp-setup (in a terminal) instead.

Have you rebooted since installing the printer?

Is the printer still plugged in to the PC and powered on?

When I was running the LiveCD for pclinux-2012.08-KDE, my HP 722c printer installed fine and printed for me.  Now that I have installed the OS, I can't seem to install the printer.
I'm assuming that you've done a clean install of 2012.08.

Thanks, Eddie, I'm not sure what you mean by "clean", but what I did was install over existing partitions, formatting the root partition and leaving my home partition.  Is there anything else?

That's just about as clean as it gets  :)
I always prefer to install to a freshly created/formatted partition though, that's what I meant by a clean install.

and leaving my home partition.

This is what I'm unsure about because I've always had my home directory on my / root partition. Could it possibly be that something left over in your home directory structure from your previous install is in conflict with your new install?

Is there anything else?

Can't think of anything for now.

One way to find out is to create a new user account and try set up everything from there.

Maybe it is referring to  the HP Device Manager which should be available through the main menu - More Applications - Printing .......  if you have it installed

When I do that, it shows the HP Device Manager, but when I click on it nothing happens. ???  I can't find anything in Synaptic about an HP Device Manager. :(

I don't know what else to do.  It installs fine in LiveCD.  I really don't want to buy another printer >:(

Batzilla - Well, that reveals the problem. For some reason, your printer is not being seen by the O/S.  So either the driver nor CUPS really matters at this point.  If it works with the liveCD, we know it's not a hardware problem....

Can you run "hp-check" at the CLI as root?

I'm sorry to be so ignorant, but I don't know what the CLI is. ;D  But I did run "hp-check" as root in a terminal.

Run hp-toolbox from a terminal and post the output.

Can you run "hp-check" at the CLI as root?

HP-DeskJet-722C
---------------
Type: Unknown
Device URI: socket://HP:9100

That's a lot of stuff!! :o  Do I now need to run "hp-check --fix"?
I get very similar output from hp-check but my HP printer is installed and working correctly.
Most of that stuff may be safely ignored, apart from the snippet I've quoted and you certainly do not need to run hp-check --fix

The Device URI is completely incorrect for your printer, as socket:// is for a network (connected by ethernet) printer but, please correct me if I'm wrong, yours is a parallel printer.
