(SOLVED)Can't find driver for HP722c in pclinux2012.08
« on: September 29, 2012, 01:04:08 PM »
When I was running the LiveCD for pclinux-2012.08-KDE, my HP 722c printer installed fine and printed for me.  Now that I have installed the OS, I can't seem to install the printer.  When I run ls /etc/cups/ppd | grep HP_DESKJET, I get nothing.  Am I looking in the wrong place?

PCC recognizes a cups-pdf generic printer, but it doesn't print anything.  And it won't give me any other options.  I also have an HP Officejet 4500 that is wifi, but I can't set it up either.

Can somebody help me out?

Thanks,

Hi batzilla,

Have you installed all the hp stuff from synaptic? (and sane)

Does PCC set up your printer work now?

How about localhost:631 in a browser?

Last hope run hp-setup command in a terminal.

Usually hp stuff is easy.

Phil's right.  I do not have an install in front of me, but if you search Synaptic for "HP Drivers" or "HP print" you should find the proper packages needed.  After they are installed, when you add the printer in the control center, you will see that model listed.

BTW, that is an old printer.  They stop producing those things over twelve years ago.  Congrats for keeping it running for so long.

Searched in Synaptic for HP Drivers and all packages seem to be there.

And ???

Could you add the printer in PCC?

If that did not work for you, do like Phil said and start cups for printer configuration

type localhost:631 in your browser, that will open the cups screen.

When you go into the Configure printing and scanning section of PCC, do you see the Add button up in the top left-hand corner.

Yes, the add button is there.  That's what I've been using.

At the bottom of the page (left side bottom) does it say "not connected"?

On clicking 'Server' in the menu, does it offer an option to "Connect"?

Is the CUPS service running? ....  check the System services in PCC.

BTW ....  the HP722c does come up in the list of printers here ......  when you get to the point where you can see the list  ;)

When I click on the add button, a screen comes up for me to select a printer device.  It has the choices: "Generic CUPS-PDF Printer," "Other," and "Network Printer."  Under "Network Printer," it has "Find Network Printer," "Apsocket/HP Jet Direct," and "Internet Printing Protocol."  The little wheel at the bottom turns while it searches for the printer device, and when nothing is found, it stops.  The only printer that has a URI shown is the "Generic CUPS-PDF Printer and that URI is cups-pdf:/.  When I am running the LiveCD, it finds my DeskJet 722c with no problem.

Select  "Apsocket/HP Jet Direct" ....  Put   HP    in the box on the top and go Forward ........  it should then display a list of all printers from which you should be able to select your printer.

If it cannot display a list of printers then it might seem that a package is missing on the install.

Selecting "Apsocket/HP Jet Direct" and putting "HP" in the box did display the HP 722c.  It took it a while to find it, but it did come up.  When I tried to print a test page, I got the message "Print Error.  There was a problem sending document 'Test Page' (job 1) to the printer."  When I click on the "diagnose" button I get  "The queue 'HP-Deskjet-722C is not enabled.'  The reason given is: 'Unable to locate printer 'HP'!'.

To enable it, select the 'enabled' checkbox in the 'Policies' tab for the printer in the printer administration tool.  To start this tool, select System>Administration>Printing from the main menu.

I hate my ignorance, but what main menu are they talking about?  In PCC >system, there is no >Administration.  Where is the main menu?

Maybe it is referring to  the HP Device Manager which should be available through the main menu - More Applications - Printing .......  if you have it installed

In the Configure printing and scanning section of PCC, you should now have an icon for your printer. Right-click the icon, click on Properties and then click on Policies. Might be a good idea to have a look at all the other settings as well.

When I do this and click on "enabled", then "apply", the check stays there for a second and then goes away.
