Advent ERT2250 No sound
« on: September 29, 2012, 01:00:59 PM »
Hi peoples, haven't used PCLinuxOS for a while so I installed KDE 2012.08 on a old Advent ERT2250 laptop and everything seems to run great but I have no sound. Im also getting confused to what sound device i'v got onboard as im reading conflicting information from the advent site and some people from the Advent forum that suggest the official Advent information for this laptop is incorrect.

http://www.adventsupport.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2698&start=0

The sound icon in the taskbar (looks like a blank piece of paper) says mixer cannot be found and in sound configuration it says "No Sound Card has been detected on your machine. Please verify that a Linux-supported Sound Card is correctly plugged in"

Thanks for any help  :)

Jim

P.S im still a newbie  :P

Check PCC - Hardware and report back what sound device is listed

You might also try

lspci

in a terminal and post back the line about the audio device

You did not mention what or if the audio device is listed as, in PCC - Harware ...... please check and report, thanks.

It is not listed from the results you posted .....  so I suggest you go into your BIOS and ensure it is enabled.
You might also get an indication of what the audio device is from there.

You appear to have on board graphics ......  can you let us know if you have a HDMI socket for the graphics or not.

Hi Just17, I have no soundcard listed in PCC>Hardware. Going into BIOS to check onboard sound was the first thing I tried previously but found no option to enable or disable audio. And no I don't have HDMI output. I really hope its not a hardware issue  :(

Thanks for your help

According to this page, your laptop is a rebranded Uniwill L51II5 laptop. Following the link provided in the same page, I downloaded the drivers for this laptop and had a look at the readme file included in the zip. Seems that this laptop is equipped with a Realtek High Definition audio codec but I don't know why it is not recognized by PCLinuxOS.

Realtek provides linux drivers for its High Definition audio codecs in this page. Maybe you should give it a try...

With no sign of an audio device in lspci; none in PCC hardware and no settings in BIOS, I am unsure where to go from there  :(

This thread about lack of sound device might imply a similar problem

http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-116842.html

which would point to a hardware problem.

It was unresolved unfortunately.

Thanks for help guys,
I found In this thread http://www.adventsupport.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2698&start=0 someone manages to get windows xp working by installing the Quanta QTW3M945GM1 audio driver from intels website, none of the realtek drivers worked for him. Someone else replies that those drivers are for Conexant Venice chip. They make it sound like these laptops probably didn't ship with realtek audio at all?!?!?

A driver can only work if the hardware is found by the OS ......  which apparently yours is not  :(

aarrgghghhh :(, oh well thanks for all the help who posted, i'll see if my hardware skills are better than my PCLinuxOS skills by taking it apart and checking for any obvious reasons why the chip's not being recognized.

What OS did you have installed in this laptop before PCLinuxOS? Was the sound working with it?

It was Vista 32bit previously but i never owned it back then, my friend who i got it off just said Vista's on it but it has problems, i just installed PCLinuxOS instead. I saved the recovery partition though so may just try it out and see if there's sound.

That would be a worthwhile exercise .....  at least to see if the sound card is listed in the Devices Manager, even if the correct driver is not installed.
