Just to say, having checked through my own system, I also have fuse as a 'normal' group, so that doesn't seem to be wrong, although it means GIDs will tend to be offset by one from UIDs. It's ugly but it doesn't matter. Sorry for misleading you there.

500 is right for the first user on the system.

Can you post the result of ls -la /home/buck, please.

Also df

ok, great, kj!  I'm feeling better. ;D  Still wondering about the other questions, though.

[buck@localhost root]$ ls -la /home/buck

OK, all looks well so far. The next steps to take are already on the forum in this thread: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,108063.0.html.

Hope that sets you in the right direction.

Thanks, kjp.  That helped a lot.  My files are no longer read-only and I can log in as user instead of root.  I even got my old desktop back.  I don't know how that happened.  The only problem is, I've now got more problems.

1.  The green check mark that indicates whether the internet is connected or not is no longer shown (minor problem).
2.  When I tried to open kwrite to edit my grub/menu.lst it crashed.

[root@localhost buck]# kwrite /boot/grub/menu.lst
kwrite(3242)/kdeui (kdelibs): Session bus not found
To circumvent this problem try the following command (with Linux and bash)
export $(dbus-launch)
KCrash: Application 'kwrite' crashing...
KCrash: Attempting to start /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/drkonqi from kdeinit
sock_file=/root/.kde4/socket-localhost.localdomain/kdeinit4__0

[1]+  Stopped                 kwrite /boot/grub/menu.lst
[root@localhost buck]#

A screen comes up that tells me to retry.  When I click on that, it takes me to the grub/menu.lst and allows me to edit.

3. When I check the ownership of /home/buck/tmp, it tells me it's root.  I changed that before I rebooted, but it apparently changed back to root.
4.  I can't get my HP 722c set up.  See http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,109581.0.html.

There are probably others, but I don't want to get completely off track.  I probably should do some research.

The reason your "tmp" directory is owned ny root, is because it is a symlink to the system (/tmp/) directory.  That is normal.

Check the system tmp directory
Code: [Select]
ls / -lh

Notice the "t" on the permissions of my system tmp...that is important.

The only reason I have this setup like this, is because I have my tmp going into a ramdisk, so it is faster, and wiped out at reboot.  I believe the default is to have individual tmp directories for each user, seperate from the system tmp (if this is no longer the case, someone can correct me).

Glad it helped.

1. I think you might get some help if you search the forum for "net applet".

2. The correct command to open kwrite (and other KDE applications) from a terminal is "dbus-launch kwrite". It does crash if that syntax isn't used.

3. Is /home/buck/tmp/ a directory or a symbolic link to /tmp/? If the latter its permissions and ownership don't matter as long as /tmp/ has the permissions drwxrwxrwt (pags beat me to it).

4. I can't help specifically with an HP printer because I haven't got one. However, the consensus seems to be that the most reliable way to set up printers is to go to "localhost:631" in a web browser. This will take you to the CUPS web interface. If it doesn't, make sure CUPS is installed and running (look in PCC -> System -> Manage Services).

Glad it helped.

Additionally:

You don't need to start KWrite with "dbus-launch kwrite" if you are starting it as the ordinary user you're logged in as.

If you are starting it as root you may or may not have to use "dbus-launch". It all depends on how you've become root. If you are running from a login shell, i,e. if you're logged in as root or have become root with "su -" or "su -l" (or if plain "su" is an alias of "su -" on your system) then "dbus-launch" is not necessary.

But if you've used plain "su" and if "su" is not an alias for "su -", then you need "dbus-launch".

What complicates matters is that "su" by default is an alias for "su -" in some PCLinuxOS versions but not in all: it may depend on when you first installed. One drawback of using "su -" is that it changes your current directory to /root. The drawback with using "dbus-launch" is that you may get a couple of warnings:
Quote
Connecting to deprecated signal QDBusConnectionInterface::serviceOwnerChanged(QString,QString,QString)
QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.

Usually KWrite will not misbehave.

Thanks, pags.  I ran ls / -lh and it showed that the tmp permissions do have a "t" at the end.

Thanks, kjp and Bald Brick, I did change users with the plain "su".  I just logged in as "su -" and this is what I got:

[buck@localhost ~]$ su -
Password:
[root@localhost ~]# kwrite /boot/grub/menu.lst
kdeinit4: Shutting down running client.
Connecting to deprecated signal QDBusConnectionInterface::serviceOwnerChanged(QString,QString,QString)
QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.
QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.
kbuildsycoca4 running...
It brought up kwrite and let me edit the file.  Then it came up after I copied this:
klauncher: Exiting on signal 15.  But all I have now is a black cursor at the bottom.

I'm checking out "net applet" and "localhost:631".  Ill let you know how things turn out.
