SOLVED - Uninstalled strigi and now Pclos won't start.
« on: September 26, 2012, 10:12:15 PM »
This morning I used Synaptic to uninstall strigi as I never use it anyway. Then, when I tried to reopen synaptic I got the message - "...not found".

I switched off and when I restarted I got a "Welcome to localhost.localdomain. Login." I logged in with my username and password but the screen went blank and then hung. Ctrl/alt or any combinations would work and I had to do a hard switch off. Tried again using root to login but the same happened - a blank screen and hard hang.

Took out my trusty livecd and the same thing happened again.

Surely merely uninstalling strigi would not cause this? But if it did how do I get back in again?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

what other package was marked for removed when you set to remove it?

some packages have very complicated dependency chains and they sometimes drag out a lot of essential packages when they are set to be removed.

It is always advised to look at what else will be removed when removing packages.

Strigi is a fundamental part of KDE, I believe. You can keep it from running, but you can't remove it.

If by blank screen you mean that not even command prompt is displayed, then probably you need a reinstallation.

But if you do have command prompt, experts here may be able to get you back up running without much loss. You may have the OpenBox shell or something like that.

Please clarify. Preferably post a photo of the screen.

Didn't notice.  ::) But I will the next time.

I wanted to disable it at first but it was not in the list of running programs.

Nothing there to make a photo of, just blank. No command prompt, nothing. I have been out for 4 hours and just tried again but  same result. I think you're right - reinstall.

But how do I reinstall if I get the same blank screen with my livecd?

All is well - I had forgotten to fix the boot order in Bios.  ::) ::) So I can now do a reinstall.

Many thanks for your help.

Looking at the number of posts we see here resulting from critical packages being removed by uninstallation of some thing user believes he does not need, can there be a solution for this?
- You mark a package for removal.
- When the question of actual removal comes it should ask the user if he would like to remove the specified package only or remove associated packages too?
- Alternatively may be add a 3rd right click option to Synaptic such as (a) Remove this package (b) Completely remove this package with associated files (c) Remove the package including associated packages
- Then we should get a prominent dialog showing the actual other packages being removed in an expanded state. (Presently they appear in a collapsed state which leads a person who does not know to just click Apply. Also even someone who knows might tend to forget to expand and see in a hurry)

Packaging well will cure headaches of many :) But learning to package will cause headaches in many :(

It's possible to which packages are being upgraded/removed etc by selecting the Show Details option (prior to pressing the second "Apply" )

And on Summary, you can see the number of packages that are marked for removal.
A number of 150+ packages should ring some bells :P

The right question would be: if some bells ring and nobody hears them, should we blame the bells? ;)

Didn't hear any bells. ;D ::)

But that list is certainly an eye-opener. It's a wonder that anything is left.

In my defence - sortof - I should say that I use Minime and so there wouldn't have been quite that huge number. And I like to keep even Minime minimal. Grin

That said I shall certainly pay more attention next time I decide to uninstall anything.
