Thunderbird constantly freezing
« on: September 24, 2012, 06:12:06 AM »
Since I upgraded to KDE 4.8.3 and the latest Thunderbird release, I have been finding that TB is periodically freezing. At first I ignored it, but it is getting to be rather frustrating when I look up to see everything I just typed has disappeared. Is there anywhere obvious I can look for error messages to try and sort this out?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or comments....

I just tried reinstalling everything, but the download seemed to occur instantaneously - makes me think it is using cached packages and therefore isn't really a reinstall. The freezing is getting more and more pronounced. Any suggestions on how to resolve this would be very gratefully received....

I don't use Thunderbird so I'm unsure what's stored in the .thunderbird folder  but if possible that could be moved elsewhere. Then run Thunderbird again and it should be recreated

Alternatively you could run Bleachbit to clean Thunderbird's cache and vacuum it, and any other system cache/tmp files etc. (be careful with passwords and cookies you may want to keep)

Restart desktop to "flush" anything else lingering around.

If you have any extensions in Thunderbird it may be worth disabling them. And plugins as well and reinstate hem if needed.

Maybe a Thunderbird issue. I use the latest TB on WinXP at work and it also tends to freeze for a couple of seconds.

No idea what the reason might be though.
All that is is good. PCLinuxOS is.

I use TB all the time, both 32 and 64 bit

I have no problems, freezes or even hesitations.

As far as the problem is concerned.

Backup your emails.
Can be done by installing an add-on, called:ImportExportTools 2.7.2.2
This will allow you to :backup-save in text-html-eml-cvs.....single-folders-groups

Then wipe of TB from your computer, including .thunderbird

Reinstall all
reinstall addons you really need
Import mail folders again

If you still have a problem....I will resign from my post as useless-info-agant.

Xena thanks for the comment - am sure you are far from a useless-info-agent!

Have installed the import/export add on, but am a bit confused with all the export options. I have 3 accounts with more than 2GB of emails in them so don't want to do the wrong thing. Also don't want to have to export each individual mail folder as that would take a loong time. Am guessing that selecting the Tools > ImportExportTools > Save all mail files or Save all profiles files should do the trick?

What ever you do, the original is still there.
So, if you don't like the result ....nothing lost but a few minutes

First, create a folder somewhere, then copy /home/dj_bridges/.thunderbird into that folder.
Then experiment till you find what you need.

Sorry for the delay in replying, but have been testing various options and haven't seemed to solve the problem fully yet, although TB freezes for a shorter period. So far I have tried disabling various add-ons, but have had a freeze when all are disabled so don't think it is an add-on. Am still trying to work out an easy way to save emails with the import/export addon and then reimport them, but so far I have struggled. Will try and find some time soon to work through this!

Well, I have disabled and then enabled various add-ons and somehow don't seem to have any freezes at the moment. Not convinced I did anything to sort the issue, but I will take it at this point...... thanks for all the suggestions - will revist this thread if the issue begins again.
