logout slow since kde 4.8.3 update
« on: September 22, 2012, 07:58:14 PM »
I've noticed since the last update when I click "PC/Leave/Log out" that it takes about 10 seconds for the logout box to come up. When it does come up and you click on it, it takes a long time before it actually logs out.

Now the interesting thing is if I click "PC/Leave/Log out", and then "Cancel." And then "PC/Leave/Log out", the logout option comes right up and the system logs out at normal speed.

Its almost like the command has to load the first time and now its in memory after you cancel it, it can execute quickly on the second try.

Anyone else see this?

<edit> BTW. The system in general runs fine and I can open and close applications with no issues.

Never tried the double log out trick ........  but I have noticed a lot of slowness in logging out/rebooting on one of the machines ......  and opening a konsole and 'reboot'ing is much faster.

I found a workaround that logs you out fast.

You have to create an executable file with the following in it.
Code: [Select]
DISPLAY=:0 qdbus org.kde.ksmserver /KSMServer logout 0 0 0
Got the idea from:
http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=88022

Then I created a shortcut on my desktop called LOGOUT.

Exactly the same here on both my laptop and desktop. Everything else fine. Most odd!

I have been hoping that recent updates would fix this issue, but no luck.

Why would the logout button take so long, but if I use my workaround it works right away?

Hi, didn't realize there was a kde update but I checked my system and it does say 4.9.2 now. Same issue.

I'm wondering if a fresh install would help, but thats such a major PITA to do.

Same here: when I click logout I notice a lot of disk activity and after about a ten seconds delay the logout/shutdown dialog is finally ready to be clicked.
BTW, once the dialog is ready the rest of the shutdown is quick. KDE 4.9.2 here.

Bye

On my 64-bit system I still have 4.8.3.

Nepomuk doesn't work correctly, so when I deactivated it, logout went quickly again. Checked next time by activating it again, and voila, the problem was back.

I had a 32-bit test install with 4.9.2, where desktop search works fine, and never had that problem  ???

Interesting. There is an entry in my ~/.xsession-errors log that says:
Code: [Select]
"/usr/bin/kdeinit4(15841)" Soprano: "Could not connect to server at /home/docnascar/tmp/ksocket-docnascar/nepomuk-socket (No such file or directory)"
"/usr/bin/kdeinit4(15841)" Soprano: "Could not connect to server at /home/docnascar/tmp/ksocket-docnascar/nepomuk-socket (No such file or directory)"
KDirWatch: /home/docnascar/.xsession-errors is a file. Use addFile!

What is this nepomuk?

Though I don't understand it if I goto Configure your desktop->Desktop Search, nepomuk enable box is not checked, however it says "Desktop search services are active"

On two of our machines with KDE, pressing the logout button on the task bar produces three buttons:

Logout  blue button
Turn off Computer  red button
Restart Computer  orange button

What I have noticed is that pressing the Logout blue button is activated immediately. However, both the red button and the orange button have an additional small white downward pointing arrow to their lieft. Pressing the red or orange buttons lead to  activation delays. Pressing the white arrows, on the other hand, produces immediate effects. Not a real problem, just a puzzling effect.
The third machine (with LXDE) exhibits no such difficulty.

Turn Off Computer and Restart Computer shouldn't have any lag when pressing them.

The little arrows you see indicate that more options are available. You activate the additional options by pressing and holding the left button until the options appear as a menu.

The options for Turn Off Computer are the hibernate modes (I forget the actual names since I'm on a German system).

The options for Restart Computer are the boot menu options (e.g. mine are Linux, Linux-nonfb, Failsafe, Windows and another Linux distro). This way I can directly boot into Windows without having to select it in the boot menu itself.
