Touchpad Solution and Touchpad Toggle as Defaults

May I respectfully suggest that the touchpad-solution program be installed by default in all future updates to the PCLinuxOS installation discs? Many people (including myself) do not know about the availability of this program.

When I first installed PCLinuxOS, I was very frustrated because I could not 'tap-to-click' the touchpad. I 'Googled' the problem but was unable to find a solution which worked.

Finally, after a day or two, by perusing this forum at some length, I did find the answer - and, like all things Linux, it is easy once you know what to do! I downloaded and installed the touchpad-solutions program from Synaptic and I tried the options. Option 1 did not work on my computer but Option 2 did. (On a much older computer which I am giving away to a friend, and on which I have installed PCLinuxOS Phoenix Edition (because, being totally computer-ignorant, I feel he will have no trouble learning to operate it), I had to use Option 3.)

I hope that the administrators will consider my suggestion about making this excellent program a default.

On the other hand, may I also respectfully suggest that you remove the touchpad-toggle program from the default installation?

When at first I could not figure out how to enable the touchpad, I tried using this one. Naturally, as soon as I activated it (and yes, I read the warning - this warning should be made much stronger) the touchpad 'froze' completely. Not knowing what else to do, I had to completely reinstall the program. (Fortunately this is not a difficult or time-consuming process.)

I should think that anyone reading these boards who would need or want this program could easily download it from Synaptic.

You could probably make such an argument regarding the touchpad-solution program but I think that that program is much more necessary and useful upon initial installation than is touchpad-toggle.

Of course my suggestions would be of more importance to someone installing PCLinuxOS to a notebook computer rather than to a desktop computer.

Please excuse me if these suggestions are out of line. I hope that any administrator reading them will accept them in the spirit in which they are offered.

And in conclusion: I want to thank each and every individual who works on this excellent operating system and makes it available to all of us.

Touchpad Toggle is default on some of the versions only.  My LXDE installation does not have it installed.  I did have problems with the touch pad on my old IBM ThinkPad R51 but installing Touchpad Solution fixed it.

I have been using PCLinuxOS for less than a month. I do not really feel qualified to make such an 'official' request at this time. (I have tried the KDE edition, which I do not care for, the LXDE edition, which I also do not care for, and the Xfce edition, which I like very much.) I thought I would post my suggestion here, hoping that some members would comment as to whether they agree with me about the two touchpad programs or not.

After all, both programs are in the repository, one being installed by default and the other not.

It's just that I think that the default situation ought to be reversed.

Do any others agree with me?

If enough people do, then perhaps I will put this into the package suggest section.

Touchpad solution may be the best to use with your hardware, but not all hardware is the same. Touchpad toggle may be the best to use with other hardware - notebook or netbook.

I use Touchpad Toggle here without any issues.
It will give information, when it no mouse found.

My experience with both - though limited - is the same.

The toggle functions as I like, and I have used the 'Solution' option on three laptops I have installed to recently.

Not only do I think the 'solution' would be a good addition to a standard ISO, but it would be even better if some indication of its presence and purpose could be given to the new user to make it easy to find and apply where necessary.

Just a thought, but synaptiks (which is in the repo) serves both purposes, and will automatically switch the touchpad off when you plug in a mouse. 

And does it all quietly in the background.  It adds a Touchpad entry to Configure Your Desktop.

- I have been using some light portable computers (netbook / notebook) recently along with my home desktop.
- My observation has been that for many people, a portable is their first computer.
- All portables (or may the ones I have seen) come with a touchpad by default.
- It definitely makes it a smoother experience to have tap-to-click enabled by default so much so that I have been struggling during my numerous installations of PCLinuxOS on my portable each for a different purpose.
(Almost all other modern distributions I have tried have this enabled by default so anyone coming here from elsewhere will start to think there is something wrong with our hardware recognition or that something is broken with PCLinuxOS at first)

I could not do this as I do not have the requisite skills yet. If I had I would have sent in a patch or whatever would be appropriate for consideration of the respected devs.

Hence my vote to enable. And the trust in devs to find the best way of doing it.

maybe ghostbunny have the solution, we work on some ideas about it.

The idea of Kaptan of Pardus or Kapudan of Chakra must have been similar to this thread. It is a way of allowing users apply some customisations during the first boot.

I am not sure if it will work in a Live environment and then carry over settings to the install too.
