Just a thought, but synaptiks (which is in the repo) serves both purposes, and will automatically switch the touchpad off when you plug in a mouse. And does it all quietly in the background. It adds a Touchpad entry to Configure Your Desktop.

Touchpad solutions did the trick for me.
