Remove Screenshot?
« on: September 22, 2012, 10:52:16 AM »
I have an application in my list of applications called "Take Screenshot".  It runs from the applications list as well as from the "prtsc" key.  I would like to remove the application, but I can't find it listed in synaptic among my installed applications.  I did an internet search for it and can't find any information there either.  Can someone tell me how to remove it?

Could be talking about KSnapshot - it's part of KDE..

You can uninstall it. In synaptic you find it as kde-grahics-ksnapshot.

But it is a tiny part of the overall, only 508 kB Does not seem to affect anything else. Also tremendously useful, from these screenshots to instant receipts on ebay.

Is it the PrtSc bit that annoys? You can disable it in your local .kde4/share/config/khotkeysrc file

line 472 here, change 'Enabled=' from 'true' to 'false' then save & logout/login.

Most easiest way to remove is (depends on which desktop is installed):

Start Synaptic and click on the search button.
Type "screenshot" (without the quotes).
Look which screenshot package is installed.
Mark the package for remove and apply it.

I don't remember ever installing it alone, but I might have.  Could it have been included with the Gnome installation?  I also have Shutter installed and I prefer it.  Searching synaptic with the word screenshot brings up only "shutter" as installed.  The words "Take Screenshot" don't even appear among the uninstalled.  It is named in the applications list as "Take Snapshot".  When the app is opened, it is named in the banner at the top as "Take Snapshot".

I did a search of the system files and it listed several related files and folders, but no executables.  One of those files is "dm-snapshot.ko.gz" with the file type of "G-Zip Archive".  So, maybe I did install it from outside synaptic.  That would be uncharacteristic.

Well one little issue with that is Ksnapshot is not in the menu under applications called "Take Screenshot".  Ksnapshot is under Graphics as Ksnapshot - Screen Capture.

My first thought was Ksnapshot also till he mentioned it was under applications and called "Take Screenshot". Since there is nothing in synaptic called "Take Snapshot", I was left to assumed that it was installed from outside the repository. When one runs Ksnapshot there is nothing that would suggest that "Take Snapshot" was the name of the program, unless he was referring to the button labeled as "Take a New Snapshot"

I'm using gnome.

Assuming I did install it from outside the repository, does anyone know how to uninstall it?

Take Snaphot of your desktop
Take a snapshot of your desktop and save it as a graphic file.

Try searching Synaptic for 'snapshot' (name and description).

Why don't you run it & see what loads?
Then you can uninstall it from synaptic.  ;D

It has been some time since I used gnome but is not the menu editor 'alacarte'. Use that and see what executable is used for the 'Take Screenshot' menu item.  Failing that it will have a .desktop file somewhere that provides the same info. Make a stab at the name and do a search.

I found the executable file and some related files in /usr/bin.  It is named gnome-screenshot --interactive.  However, I still cannot find anything in synaptic even close to that; either installed or not.  I am suspicious that it was loaded as part of gnome.

My main concern is one of possible conflict between "Take Screenshot" and "Shutter" and/or unnecessary use of memory.  "Take Screenshot currently loads into memory at startup and the prtscn key activates it.  I can set "Shutter" to be activated by the prtscn key and when I do so, "Take Screenshot" no longer is.  However, I assume both are then loaded into memory.  I can't find any preference settings for "Take Screenshot" or any configuration files for it.  Running the command "gnome-screenshot --help" in a terminal lists a number of options, but none provide a way to deactivate it.

Maybe my concern is unfounded.  When activating "shutter" with prtscn, it appears to work properly and no smoke or anything comes from the computer :)

Any advice?

from wikipedia -
gnome-screenshot is a utility used in the GNOME Desktop Environment for taking screenshots. It is a part of the GNOME Utilities (gnome-utils) package.

If it does not affect anything else just leave it.
