Faults after downloading upgrades.
« on: September 21, 2012, 08:36:05 PM »
Hi to one and all,

I am running PcLos 2012 and is fully updated ?

However, after my recent updates I now find that I am unable to install past my log in screen as an ordinary user. PcLos loads until the log  screen, I enter my details as an ordinary user , press enter. Then, after attempting to load further returns me to my log in screen.

If I choose to log on as root, all is well and my system installs correctly. There is no recycling of the log in screen.

A second concern is, now, when I attempt to upgrade my system I am faced with an error message telling me " could not download all repository indexes".

It says that the correct repository address in the preferences would help matters. I am at a loss here, and not sure of where to go.

I do have an old back up but thought being pointed in the right direction would help most.

Both root and home are installed on the same partition.

I must say this has been my first hiccup since installing PcLos.

Thank you,

sevenjen

the latest pclinux iso 2012.08 uses new repositories sections, old ones removed

you can try editing repo sections on the old one but it is easier if you can download the new iso than edit and update everything, if is easier for you, then the new iso is the best option here

You have two problems, possibly related.

The first is the repo section change. The old kde4 section has been removed and replaced with one called kde. The best remedy is to install the package T6 suggests. If you can't do that, open Settings ->Repositories from the Synaptic menu, click your mirror, and edit the sections to remove the '4' from kde4. Then reload and all should work.

The second one is corruption of your desktop configuration in your user account. The usual trick is to rename .kde4 in your home directory so KDE is forced to create another, default, one. Then either set it up the way you want it afresh or, if you have vital files (e-mails, addresses etc) in the old one, make copies of both (for safe keeping) and start playing around with the contents to isolate the file causing the problem.

As you only have one partition, make sure you back up your home files very frequently so you can restore them if you have to re-install. Everyone should do that but it's even more important if you can't leave the partition untouched when reinstalling.
