whereis ImageMagick executable? SOLVED!
« on: September 20, 2012, 08:49:21 PM »
Probably a simple question: I have ImageMagick installed, according to Synaptic, but it does not appear in the menu anywhere.  How do I find the executable file, among all the various files that are named ImageMagick?

Thanx--doug

supposedly in /usr/bin

this is the entry for it on my menu, you could edit menu and add it with that info

/usr/bin/xterm -geometry 40x15 -title ImageMagick +sb -iconic -e /usr/bin/display

if you don't see it in the menu, you can reinstall it, it should create the menu entry again

to be honest, it is a really unfriendly image viewer, anything is better than it or perhaps i am missing the idea of its purpose

I have the same menu entry. It is a dependency for PlayOnLinux or I wouldn't have it. IrfanViewer used through Wine is much more user friendly (at least for someone who's been using it since Win 3.1) :)

ImageMagick is primarily a graphics library used by other applications, with a very crude front-end. I don't know how it compares with other image libraries, but I think it is probably pretty good.

It's primarily a CLI tool.

the executable is called display ......  entering that at the konsole will bring it up in its basic GUI form .......

IM is a collection of cl commands.  Very powerful image manipulation but for many operations obscure/baffling syntax.

In a console use man ImageMagick for some info
or their web site http://www.imagemagick.org/script/index.php

If you want a GUI that uses the Magick libraries have a look in the repo for Converseen

edit: should have noted, it is a dependency for several applications.

Thank you all.  I will take a look at it.  This came up because someone on another list said it was a lot easier to use than Gimp.  All I ever really need is minor
modification of photographs.  I don't know if this is the answer, but it's worth a look, at least.

I marked it for reinstllation and apply, and it is now in the menu.  It runs. Whether or not I actually wind up using it, I dunno.  All these image manipulation programs are kinda off-the-wall for me!
I used to make b&w prints in the darkroom--that's about my speed!  At any rate, the thread will be marked solved, since it is.  thank you all once more.

depending on what you want to do, gimp is alot easier

sometimes use a image viewer with basic tools is better like gqview or gwenview

OK, I'm looking at all the possibilities.  I installed gqview and it apparently works, but there were all kinds of errors in the install box, relating to not finding "foo" and "foo2" and so on.  Perhaps someone
should investigate this.  Thanx for all the input.  --doug

I never heard of Krita, and it's not in the repo.  If it's available as an rpm I might try it, if you give me a bit of a summary of its features.  --doug

It is now called calligra-krita and is in the updates section of the 32-bit repos and the testing section of the 64-bit repos.

Just looked at the description of calligra-krita: "Krita is a creative sketching and painting application." I have never been able to do any kind of sketch or hand-drawn anything on the computer, and I really
don't want to anyway.  All I need to do is clean up some photographs a little--crop, increase contrast or density, that sort of thing. (I do use AutoCAD, but that's not sketching  or painting!)  Thanks anyway.  --doug
