.kde4-new vs .kde4
« on: September 20, 2012, 05:24:07 AM »
Hi,

I did the upgrade to the latest kde. I was checking my home folder with hidden files checked and found a new folder .kde4-new. There is also a .kde4 folder. I checked in the autostart for both and found conky.sh and xpad.sh. I added both of these to .kde4. They also exist in .kde4-new. In .kde4-new there is updateme and noblank.sh. Neither of these exist in .kde4. I installed the kde-noblank using synaptic. The system must have installed updateme. So it looks like the system is using .kde4-new. Is this correct? When I read forum messages they only refer to .kde4. Thanks.

No it isn't. The system uses .kde4.

.kde4-new is a backup of a newer version of .kde4. It is for instance created when you restore your old .kde4 from .kde4.bak by running the RestoreMyKDEdesktop script.

The RestoreMyKDEdesktop script is obsolete and was only a temporary solution for the time when an updated kde4-config was messing up existing user-accounts.

The recent versions of kde4-config (any of the 3 versions which came out in the last 1-2 months) do not modify existing user-accounts or their desktops
=> there is no need to
a) backup ~/.kde4
b) setup/run any script or restore something that wasn't touched at all.

The KDE desktop settings are stored in ~/.kde4 , do not delete this folder because it contains your personalised settings.
In case you delete this folder then logout/login and the default KDE settings will be copied from /etc/skel/ into your user-account.
Should you find a ~/.kde4-new, -old, .bak, or whatever else then you can just ignore or delete that old stuff.

Yes, Pinoc, I know that RestoreMyKDEdesktop is obsolete. I do read your posts.

Nevertheless nwtpclnxs's .kde4-new must be a backup of some sort, and the most likely explanation for why it exists is still that he has run RestoreMyKDEdesktop - before or after it became obsolete....  ;)

Hi,

Thanks for all the replies. Yes I did restore my old desktop setting. I found an icon on my desktop which must have been placed there by the system when I upgraded to kde4.8.3. I had no idea that it was obsolete. I recently installed kde-noblank but I had to remove it. The system placed the script in .kde4-new. I went looking for it in .kde4 and that is when I found .kde4-new. I will delete .kde4-new and assume that all will be well. Thanks.

I have been ignoring kde4-config while doing updates because of previous issues with it. If this doesn't restore your current settings because there are not altered then what is the purpose of the kde4-config update?

kde4-config defines default KDE settings to be applied to new user-accounts.

Hello !
I wrote in this topic
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,108595.0.html
without to know of this here.
I would know what i can to get new settings in my user if kde4-config doesn't change old settings.
It is a paradox but i want new settings and no old settings :-(
