..also... I wanted to buy a 64-gig usb stick on Saturday.  but the gal said to me that I could buy a 500-gig passport drive for less than a 64-gig usb drive.  So I did.

I also installed PCLOS LXDE to a Patriot XT 32-gig (rockin) stick.  How..... I popped out the internal drive and made the install go to the usb stick.  After that, I put the internal hard-drive back in.

But now I have a stick that I can "stick" into anyone's computer, and boot it up into my PCLOS-LXDE.  Providing they have the option of placing a usb boot-option in the boot order, prior the the actual hard-drive.

Then they can get a feel of how good Linux (PCLOS) is...!

I used to go around with a live cd ready to pop it into someone's computer to show them the joys of Linux! :)

BUT, once a usb-stick is loaded... it is way faster than a cd/dvd disk.

I tried the wired connection and although it said the network was up I couldn't connect..

Well we need the wired connection up.     Go PCC and find hardware, browse and configure,
ethernet card.    Then run config tool, then connect to the internet.

Then you can search Synaptic for kernel firmware, ndiswrapper's, new kernels,  etc.
if the current drivers you find in hardware, browse hardware aren't going to work.

Look thru PCC for all options, then go thru Synaptic and try the newest kernel.

I did that yesterday with no success but figured it couldn't hurt to try again but it didn't work so well. When I tried to boot into the 500gb, PCLOS showed the login screen for a second then flashed to a blank screen (light tan in color, not black). I waited awhile but then just shut the system down. Tried it a few times with the same result. So now I'm back to not getting in to the desktop.

I'm beginning to think I should just do a fresh install, at least my internet worked then and only the sound was giving me problems.

Yes, you're right.

Short and to the point!  ;D

But yeah, that's what I'm going to do. I'm also going to spring for a new drive as I can't see having the old laptop turned into a paperweight. I'll put the old drive back and install the new one (500gb - 7200rpm) drive in the Alienware. Then I'll install PCLinuxOS and tackle the sound issue.

So...I'll be back!
