win7 doesn't work on a usb drive?

supposedly win 8 will work this way

Has to be an internal drive, or one of two
internal drives, neither does XP.  Don't know
about W8.

You can make it work using Win PE  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Preinstallation_Environment

Quote
Windows Preinstallation Environment (aka Windows PE, WinPE) is a lightweight version of Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008 R2 that is used for the deployment of workstations and servers. It is intended as a 32-bit or 64-bit replacement for MS-DOS during the installation phase of Windows, and can be booted via PXE, CD-ROM, USB flash drive, or hard disk. Traditionally used by large corporations and OEMs (to preinstall Windows client operating systems to PCs during manufacturing), it is now widely available free of charge via the Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK).

Haven't seen that one or the included programs, etc. or what it actually does.
My  ActiveBootDisk does about everything I can think of, except defraggle
everything prior to backup, which allows an unfragmented restore, which
is hard to do with other programs.

I don't use Windows anymore so I can't try out the free WinPE you mentioned.

I tried to restore ms-sys using the recommendation from the following link:
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,106956.0.html

The following results from the terminal:

[root@localhost guest]# apt-get install ms-sys
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
E: Couldn't find package ms-sys

Any suggestions will be appreciated!!

Great tip linux411 as I do seem to be the family/neighbourhood computer help desk. The only thing I would disagree with is your last comment

"Oh, P.S.: Don't forget to remove the PCLinuxOS from the cd drive! :-)"

I would convince them to install PCLinuxOS and leave them the disk to try out :))

+1!  The only thing that would be better would be to demo an install while you're fixing their machine.  When the installation is done with one reboot in under 30 minutes, just smile and say, "Now that's an operating system."

I've given away more PCLinuxOS disks than I care to count.

If running from a LiveCD, before you can "apt-get install ..." anything, you need to
Code: [Select]
apt-get update
as root.

This will populate the RPM database with the available applications.  If you ever check Synaptic from a LiveCD, the only available apps are the installed ones...it doesn't know about any others until you update the DB,
