[Solved] - Network monitoring tool
« on: September 18, 2012, 06:50:58 AM »
Hello

IN another distro there is Gnome-nettools which gives a window with ping, traceroute, whois, portscan and a couple of other tabs.  This is a useful tool but I can't find an equivalent on PCLinuxOS 2012 KDE option, is there such a thing?

Thanks

You can use gnome-nettool from the repository even though you are running KDE.

Probably the quickest solution for you  ;)

Well I have installed Gnome-nettool, via Synaptic but I can't find it in any of the start menus, how do I get it to run?

Thanks

As root navigate to

/usr/share/applications

and open the file

gnome-nettool.desktop

in your preferred text editor such as Kwrite.

Navigate to the "Categories" entry near the end of the file and edit the line changing

X-MandrivaLinux-Internet-Other;

to

X-MandrivaLinux-Internet-System;

Save the file.

You may need to open the menu twice to get the new entry there .....   it will now appear under "System"

Prior to that - if you wish - you can launch it from a terminal by entering

gnome-nettool    <Enter>

HTH.
