Configure Video - No 3D acceleration - is it correct?
« on: September 14, 2012, 10:04:45 AM »
I have an AMD E-450 based notebook with Radeon HD 6320 graphics.

On configuring video using PCC > Hardware > Configure Video, these settings are shown :
Code: [Select]
Keep the changes?
The current configuration is:

Disable Ctrl-Alt-Backspace: no
3D hardware acceleration: no
Keyboard layout:
Mouse type:
Monitor: Flat Panel 1366x768
Monitor HorizSync: 31.5-53.0
Monitor VertRefresh: 56.0-69.0
Graphics card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI ATI Radeon HD 2000 and later (radeon/fglrx)
Color depth: 16 million colors (24 bits)
Resolution: Automatic (24bpp)
Xorg driver: fglrx

Please note the 3D hardware acceleration: no

Is this correct?

I have desktop effects enabled in KDE. I do not know if everything works though.

From what little I have read it seems that there is no 3D available unless using the proprietary driver ......  and then it *should* work.

Did you back out of the proprietary driver due to suspend difficulties?

To clear any confusion :

- I presently have 2 separate PCLinuxOS installs on my notebook side by side. 1 is the main stable install and another is a testing install. I use this testing install to test and experiment to determine what works and then apply it to my stable install.
- I had removed fglrx which is proprietary from my testing install. The stable install runs on fglrx. (The Free driver seems to eat battery a lot)
- That final settings page came up not because I was changing the driver but because I was fixing the resolution from 1024x768 to 1366x768.
- Since fglrx is the proprietary driver, I believe it should have 3D acceleration enabled. But the settings seem to indicate otherwise and that is confusing me...

I think I have seen it happening once to me.
Repeat the procedure of enabling the proprietary drivers and check if hardware acceleration turns to yes.
What result does fglrxinfo give in the console?

Everything seems OK with fglrx. I assume you clicked "yes" when asked if you want to use the proprietary driver.

I believe this message occurs by fault and doesn't represent the current state of the driver...

Try changing back to open source driver, reboot, and then back to the proprietary one...

APOLOGIES! :)

It took me a long time to realize that I could not post the glxinfo output because of exceeding the character count for each post.
The post-reply was always timing out. Thought it was a weird error with the forum.

If you would like to see the full glxinfo output, I could post it to pastebin.

I would definitely try that. Will report back with results.

I believe 3D actually works because I could see glxgears in action. Also ATi Catalyst Control Centre allows me to adjust things and never complains.

I use a NVidia GeForce Go 6150 with the proprietary driver, and PCC output says the same (no 3D hardware acceleration). I also get the same results with glxinfo (direct rendering: Yes) and my video card seems to be working fine, so I assume there must be a problem in that line of PCC.
