Update problems. SOLVED

For the past few days when I try to update I get error messages implying that the repository is inactive. (whichever one I choose)

Read the error message more carefully, to see exactly what it's telling you. Do a forum search with the error message as the subject.

This is the error message I'm getting from heanet (similar ones from other repos),  Which part do you suggest I search for?

As far as I know nothing in my settings has changed and I've been able to update regularly  until last week.

Could not download all repository indexes

The repository might be no longer available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and the correct writing of the repository address in the preferences.

That's not the error message, that's the pre printed summation that appears above the actual error message in the box below. What does the actual error message tell you?

Solved it.  Although use LXDE  I also have some KDE stuff installed (principally K3B) and I found Neal's message about switching from KDE4 to plain KDE in the sections box.

Just follow the instructions here.

Even if you have no KDE applications you still need to have the proper sections activated for Synaptic to function properly. There is no kde4 section anymore, it having been replaced by the kde section.

Be sure to manually install the apt-sources-list package, through Synaptic, if it is not installed automatically. This will upgrade all of the mirror choices at once. Once installed, and Synaptic is shut down, then restarted, it will be using the upgraded sources.list.
