PCLinuxOS and Samsung NP305U1-A06IN
« on: September 14, 2012, 10:43:01 AM »
I have recently bought a Samsung NP305U1-A06IN notebook.
I am posting this as a catchall thread for all the issues I will discover. Hope this will help anyone else who needs any information about this model or its cousins.

I am using individual thread to clearly discuss those issues and will just link to them from here.

NOTE : I will keep editing the posts as things develop so the thread content may change over time.
Packaging well will cure headaches of many :) But learning to package will cause headaches in many :(

Rough notes regarding issues
===================

Display not properly recognised.
Uses 1024x768 instead of 1366x768.
Solved by going into PCC > Hardware > Configure Video Card > Monitor > Change from 1024x768 Flat panel to 1366x768 Flat panel AND Resolution to Automatic.

----------------------

Tap to click not enabled in KDM.

Fixed using Touchpad_solutions software from the repository as advised by Just17 here :
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,109125.0.html

----------------------

Tap to click not enabled. Do it by either using kcm_touchpad or Synaptics.
Prefer kcm_touchpad.

----------------------

Mixer show HD-Generic Audio and not ATi. This will prevent you from adjusting volume directly from the system tray.
Fixed by changing settings in Mixer.

----------------------

Added the following line to /etc/rc.d/rc.local for enabling Bluetooth Dial-Up Networking with Nokia E6-00.
Code: [Select]
rfcomm bind rfcomm0 xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx 22This will ensure that it will run at every boot. Else will have to open Konsole and do it manually everytime.
However, if you change the mobile, then you will have to change the value after rfcomm0 to suit the new phone.

----------------------

sdptool browse fails with the following error:
Failed to connect to SDP server on 10:F9:EE:20:45:27: Host is down
This does not happen always. Will irritate if you have to deal with Bluetooth or Bluetooth Dial-Up Networking.

----------------------

Cannot resume from suspend with fglrx driver.
Works with Free driver but kills the battery.
Discussion below :
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,108960.0.html

UPDATE : fglrx 9.0 a.k.a. AMD driver release 12.9 solves this problem.
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/embedded/Pages/embedded_linux.aspx

----------------------

HD Playback has definite tearing.
Use AMD ATi Catalyst Control Centre to enable Tear Free mode.
Note that this is supposed to use more graphics resources which in other words may lead to reduced battery life.

Currently this 12.9 driver works fine for suspend / resume in my test partition.
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/embedded/Pages/embedded_linux.aspx

So another issue resolved.

NOTE : Before installing this driver, copy your original xorg.conf to a safe place. Once this driver has been installed, just copy back and replace the now modified xorg.conf with the original version.
I have found that the version written by AMD driver package may cause strange behaviour with Suspend/Hibernate. This might have been because of any other customisation done on my installation, but I am not sure why.

WiFi, Network Centre and Broadcom BCM4313
----------------------------------------------
The situation is deceptive in that when I start the Network Centre it shows the signal strength from my DLink DSL 2370U as one red bar. But I go ahead and configure and give the password and then hit connect. Now a message will be displayed suggesting that connection attempt has failed. But in reality connection would have occurred as you could see the pop-up in system tray and change of system-tray icon from red cross to a green tick mark.
Also the Encryption mode is displayed as Open WEP while it actually is WPA/WPA2 Pre-Shared Key.\
It should be alright from the next reboot onwards.

Also when in a user account the icon shown in the systray is a green tick mark while for the root login it will show a row of vertical bars.

Part of this may be related to the issue discussed in a sticky in the forum. I have not gone into this matter yet.

The SysReq R E I S U B reboots the system but into an endless BIOS boot loop.

When the system reboots, we automatically go into the BIOS. Then selecting any option (save and exit, discard and exit) causes a reboot back again into BIOS!

Only way out of this loop is long press power button to power off. Then it can be restarted normally.
