Sorry, I did not know where to read. I read several of the threads here as well as the on screen instructions.
If you did not find answers for your questions after a search, then please start a new thread to ask for better/clearer/fuller explanations of the things that are not clear.
If you are booting from a live DVD, then how can it not be mounted?
If I just installed PCLinuxOS onto my flash drive, then it must be mounted, right?
It is normal for an installer to unmount and clean up after it does the installation.
So, yes, the filesystem is mounted during the installation, but would be unmounted immediately afterwards.
For people who are coming from windows, a little extra help is appreciated.
I've been a member here since 2006 and still don't feel comfortable to use linux on a daily basis.
That is unfortunate, but a discussion for another thread I think ... about what it is that makes you uncomfortable.
It would appear you have not really made an effort to get comfortable and have your questions answered and problems solved, in this forum ....... 6 posts in 6 years up to this thread gives some indication of why I say this. It is not a criticism, but might be a reason for your 'uncomfortable' situation.
Perhaps under the Grub installation options they should reverse #3 and #1.
Install Grub to the MBR of the USB drive ....... this is used to make the drive bootable; is used for the first OS installation to ensure the drive is bootable.
If this was the default I would have had no problems. Most people probably have small flash drives and only install one OS, right?
If your not sure pick option number 1 and hope for the best.
It is deliberately chosen so that the user does not inadvertently destroy an existing MBR.
The user must make a
deliberate choice to install Grub.
That is the safest default and hence the reason it is the default.
In the past everyone here was polite and helpful, even though I never was able to get my wireless setup correctly.
Thanks for all the help.
Please start a separate thread for help with your wireless set up.
I feel sure someone would be able to help.
On a general note, dealing with partitions and boot managers and such is not something that can be done with any confidence without
some background reading.
A tool like LiveUSB Creator has options that are easy to understand with a little background knowledge, but no doubt are confusing for those who know nothing of such things.
IMO, the answer to that situation is for the user to inform themselves so they can make the best use of the tool ....... and as you have said, this forum is helpful to those who ask questions with a view to gaining some knowledge.
For background on the LiveUSB Creator tool you might have a look at this two year old thread ...
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,74878.0.htmlIt explains the concepts as well as some of the options etc.
