[SOLVED]Modprobe?
« on: September 13, 2012, 10:12:25 AM »
Hello,

I was just wondering if theres anyone/place on here that can walk me through using modprobe. The last time i did it was over 4yrs ago for my previous mobo. But now I am on a newer one and the issues i am having now are the exact same as back then. Whereas PCLOS is detecting and setting the wrong audio drivers for my board.

The chipset is ATI based. But it sets it to Intel and wont allow any other to be selected. Thanks to this. The sound settings in Skype wont work correctly and my USB C-Audio headset is not being detected.

Specs:
OS- PCLOS2012 & KDE4.8.3
CPU- AMD Athlon II x2 3.1ghz
Mobo- ECS A780LM-M2 v1.0
Onboard- AMD 760G & SB710
Ram- 4gb DDr3

It will be easier to give you exact instructions if we know the name of the module that is currently auto loading and the name of the module you want to be auto loaded instead.
.. 3 things are certain in life : death, taxes and software bloat ..
.. tell me something i don't know, something i can use as i struggle to reason with the world around me ..

It says in the dropdown under Control Center...
"Intel HDA driver snd_hda_intel[ALSA]"

There i no other selection there.

Are you sure the problem is caused by the driver used and not something else?
I have on board nvidia sound card and it uses the snd-hda-intel driver.

If you have a HDMI connection on the board the sounds might be sent to that in error and thus not heard where expected.

If using USB sound devices I strongly suggest using PulseAudio management of sound devices and sound streams.

My last board was nvidia based and it used the nv drivers. Not the intel. As thats the one that i originally had to have help to run modprobe on. But theres no HDMI on this board at all.

I will try enabling Pulse audio. As it does give me that choice.

UPDATE:
Ok, I enabled Pulse Audio. And even flipped between various drivers. Which shockingly all worked for the system.
But NOTHING at all would detect my USB headset. Im at my wits end here and really hate the idea of having to scrap them. As they are a very nice and pricey set that was working great the last time.

OK, so now we have a different question to the one which caused the start of this thread, IIUC.

You do have sound, but your USB headset is not working.

In that case post the relevant line of the output from   lsusb   with the headset plugged in ........  the line that mentions the headset.

In addition maybe post a pic of the PulseAudio Volume Control configuration tab so we can see what you see there.

Just17: Yeah, I am getting sound from the speakers just fine. Except in Skype. Whereas the sounds are very distorted and grainy.

Overall, everything else is perfect.

As for my headset. The system appears to detect it. If I pull up the device info list under Kinfocenter. It shows the headset in the list with my onboard audio. Which I guess is normal. as thats how it was with my previous setup. The headset also has a volume control rocker on its cord. If I atempt to adjust the volume with it. It pulls up the volume control OSD and the sound levels will actually go up and down.

Heres the line for the headset from konsole: Bus 010 Device 002: ID 0d8c:000c C-Media Electronics, Inc. Audio Adapter

And heres a dropbox link to a screencap of what I see under kinfocenter: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10549152/dviewer.png

But, I dont see any tab for pulse audio in KMix. I see pulse in the phonon setup. But its pretty limited on what things i can do with it. Same thing before I even enabled pulse audio from the PCC.

Install  pavucontrol   and then launch  PulseAudio Volume Control .......  that is the management interface for all sound devices and streams from PA.

It was a pic of its config tab I was hoping to see (with the headset plugged in)

Still getting nothing that works with the headset.

I meant to tell you Just17, that there was no tab for Pulse anywhere. Just a entry for it in the audio control setup.

I installed pavucontrol. But its still not detecting and working with the headset. Nothing shows the headset at all.

UPDATE:
Alright, it seems I finally got the headset working now. And being detected.

Out of frustration. I just did a search in Synaptic for EVERYTHING Pulseadudio related and literally installed EVER BLASTED THING. Minus the devel packages. Dropped the driver back to the HDA Intel one and rebooted the machine.

Now the Audio setup detects it. As well as Skype. So, I thanks everyone that popped in to assist me on this. So I will set this thread to solved
