[SOLVED] trouble with file transfers to/from external drive
« on: September 13, 2012, 09:34:21 AM »
Have external 160gb HD (IDE drive with USB interface) that I keep spare isos, utilities, wallpapers, etc. It is formatted ext3.

Current install is pclos2012.02 on desktop formatted ext4 as done default by installer.

Been noticing trouble with:

1. If I select an .iso on the external PCLOS USB live creater shows running but no HDD activity. I have used USBLive creator many times and it takes a long time but I let this sit for an hour with no activity.
2. Tried transferring an .iso from the ext HDD to the desktop and it is going but taking an extremely long time (20-30 min)
3. Cannot use md5sum to check isos on the external disk. Launch and nothing happens

I don't recall these problems before but never paid attention b/c it was not an issue.

I can browse the external HDD fine w/Dolphin or write new files to it.

Is there a problem with transferring or accessing large files to and from ext3 to ext4?

Update: appears problem with a cable is to blame

i don't think it is a problem with the process, it could be a problem with the disk itself

a ide hard disk is not new isn't?

the partition could be having problems or the disk itself

you could try moving the files out of that disk and then format it again but doing a surface test, possibly you have bad sectors on that hard disk
