Corrupted User Account
« on: September 12, 2012, 08:13:07 AM »
Something is very wrong with my system. I've been using PCLOS exclusively since 2007 and never experienced instability like this. It started after upgrading to KDE 4.8.3. I described the first problem here:

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,108856.msg930592.html#msg930592

The situation is worsening. Normally bootup and login to my account were quick. But since upgrading, about 1/3 of the times when I boot my computer Grub hangs for a very long time, and if it gets past that, my account login takes a very long time. PCLOS used to let me hit ESC during bootup so I could see what was happening, but sadly that feature has been discontinued.

The newest wrinkle is that my sound comes and goes, although it works fine in my Guest account. Yesterday I had to restart the computer twice because Grub kept hanging, then the login to my account was very slow. After logging in there was no sound. Not for videos, not for Clementine. Troubleshooting the sound system showed that sound was working normally. It was as if it was muted even though it wasn't. I rebooted twice, but got no sound whatsoever.

This morning's bootup went smoothly and now sound works fine!

One thought is that after upgrading KDE, Kmix was annoying because it would fully open up upon login. So I closed it, saved the session and logged out. (My normal procedure is to always start with an empty session.) That was when the troubles started. Did something in Kmix or KDE corrupt my account? Could that effect a Gnome-game like Iagno and cause the sound instability now? But what would effect the boot process?

I'd really like to know what is broken and how to fix it. Thanks in advance for any help.

this sounds like errors in the partitions or the hard disk itself

did you made a fsck before?

also, what method did you used to update your system, kdeupgrade or update by hand by removing kde and adding kde 4.8?

No, no fsck. I don't know how.

Open Konsole.
Type the following command and hit ENTER.
Code: [Select]
suEnter your root password when asked and hit ENTER.
Then type the following command and hit ENTER.
Code: [Select]
shutdown -rF now
This shall REBOOT your computer and perform a filesystem check. Observe carefully during the boot-up for any error messages.

Let us hope this works :)
