samba for absolute beginners?
« on: September 12, 2012, 01:02:07 AM »
hello,

i'm on Pclinuxos LXDE and need to access a Windows 7 computer network. This is what I've done (not really knowing much about it...):

Configuration>Configure your Computer>System>Network Sharing>Share Drives and Directories With Windows.

I was prompted to install Samba (as far as I remember). Now, if I go do DrakSamba click on Add, how can I locate the directory of the new share? Where is it supposed to be?

Thanks for your help

I wish you luck. I have been a PCLinuxOS user for years and have never been able to get Samba to work.

In Dolphin, right click in the "places" panel and choose add entry. You will see a dialog like this one:

Type a label and location where location takes the form
smb://ip.address.of.server/name_of_smb_share

smb://192.168.1.155/SharedDocs

In my example above, the server is on 192.168.1.155 and the smb share is SharedDocs.

This will add an icon in the places panel of Dolphin. Click that icon will give you access to the share.

Hope this helps

Dolphin is the default file manager in KDE  :)

Oops! Sorry! I didn't read the whole thread carefully to realize that you are on LXDE  :P
KDE is another desktop environment.
You don't have Dolphin file manager in LXDE. I think the default file manager in LXDE is PCManFM.
Maybe a LXDE user could help you more...  :)

I don't use LXDE but can you use synaptic and install smb4k - it is a gui system for using samba shares.  I don't know it it runs on LXDE but if it does it makes things simple.

Do you want to access Linux drives from Windows, or Windows drives from Linux?

The PC where to access the files from is the "server".  The PC that does the accessing is the "client".  A "resource" (drive, folder, printer, etc.) needs to be "shared" from the server to the client, with appropriate permissions for the account (userid) that will access it.

From Windows (to Linux):
Browse the Network, or use "net use" from the command line.

From Linux (to Windows):
[don't know a specific LXDE GUI, sorry]
from command prompt:
Code: [Select]
mount.cifs //ip.or.hostname.of.server/path/to/share /path/to/linux/directory/to/mount/to -o user=userid

There are other options to work around possible problems, or to help troubleshooting, but we I would need more information, first...

I guess you should be able to browse Windows shares using PCManFM or that is what I got from a Google search.

Just type smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/ where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the local network IP address of the Windows box.
You should see whatever is shared and go from there.

I do not know if there is any method to save this though.
Packaging well will cure headaches of many :) But learning to package will cause headaches in many :(

tried to access the windows share through PCManFM by typing
smb://IP address of the Windows box.

I can see the windows share, but when I click on it, two error boxes pop up: "failed to mount windows share" + "the specific location is not mounted".

Any idea?
