New dual boot install, can't find Windows Vista
« on: September 10, 2012, 06:27:00 PM »
Hello, I'm somewhat of a newbie, though this is my fifth Linux dual boot install with various distros (my second Pclinusos trial, last time was LDXE version) over a period of 4-5 years. Several were on an older XP laptop, and now my second distro on a Windows Vista laptop.
Current machine is Sony VGN-NR385E with 2 GB Ram, 1.9 GHZ Intel dual core processor and 180GB HD.
Never had trouble with installs before, but now I can't find Windows Vista! It's not listed in the Graphical Grub menu. The install was a little strange because The Draklive didn't offer to create swap, /, and /home partitions as the wiki showed. I chose to use the default "use existing partitions" as I thought I would be able to reformat the current Debian installation. It used about 47 GB, and Draklive identified it as sda5/47GB/ext3. The next button took me to the single choice of that very same 47GB partition to reformat and the next button went to the scary EVERYTHING will be wiped screen. I wondered why no swap choice and no /, and /home choice came up. I rationalized that maybe the install process had been streamlined and that the documentation had not kept up.
PCLINUX Control Center shows Windows should still be there. It identifies it as sda1, drive letter C, NTFS-3G, 136 GB.
I do want to Dual boot, so how do I get Windows back?
Thanks,
Doc Jerry

Try opening the PCLinuxOS Control Center (PCC), go to the Boot section, and choose Set up boot system.  You can see if you can add Vista to the GRUB menu there.
