(INSTALLED and SOLVED) Pulse Audio and LXDE
« on: September 10, 2012, 05:29:55 PM »
Hi,

I want to use the system-wide equalizer in Pulse-Audio.
Per some old threads there's not one available for the
basic Alsa setup.    Is this still true ?     The main reason
I have for the step up in the audio control system.

I've also read Pulse has a stronger amp than Alsa which
is great for my machine playing low volume movies.
Leaving Alsa on and enabling Pulse should make the
audio signal to the TV very strong I've heard.   Kinda
like a double pre-amp.

Just wanted to post this equalizer question before I install
Pulse on here.

regards,

FF

Just a side note, I have intermittent problems with my sound but I refuse to use Pulse Audio since the volume goes o half, had not ever see that "stronger amp"
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

Does this help?

Yes.    There's several plugins in the repo (caps for example) and several plugins
on the internet for an system-wide equalizer for alsa, but, LXDE  would have to
be manually configured somewhere to properly install them and the global setting
would also have to be manually configured somewhere also.  What a chore for that.
I've stopped that idea for now.   S/B no problem using pulse in the long run.

So today on a test LXDE I'm going to install task-pulse, puavcontrol, and PAPref and
see how it goes.  Should see these items on the menu, and hopefully some greater
audio signal strength going to the TV when I use Crackle or Hulu to watch some current
movies.  Unless flash-player is stuck at some low audio signal level with those.

Time will tell.   I'll post back what's cooking then.

thanks for the response.

Install Veromix widget, enable it from the Tray settings, and set the max volume for Pulse Audio in that to whatever you wish.

BTW ....  to check all the controls on the hardware devices such as various volumes/pcm etc Qas mixer is what I would recommend.
There may be one of those a little low causing the low volume.

Alsa, IMO, is never going to have the GIU interfaces that are available in PA.
As PA does all the config in Alsa once the user uses its GUI, I see no good reason to bother either.

For the equalizer all you need do is add the one module to ~/.pulse/default.pa  (having copied the system-wide file to your ~/  ) as described ....  and Veromix can be quite helpful there too.

My volumeicon now tells me I'm using pulse, so far so good.

What is the proper syntax to add the equalizer module to default.pa ?

When I run qpaeq from terminal or root terminal I get exceptions and errors,etc..

Would a .desktop file do the trick once the EQ module is loaded ?

thanks a bunch.

Oops, I see !    It's a good thing I know alot about computers, Ha Ha !

Now all I need is a .desktop file to put the EQ on the menu.   It keys
up fine in the terminal.

It does seem a bit louder, playing radio tray about 80 % instead of 90 %

I hope these settings survive an update.   A good option to LXDE.

Once again, thanks for the response.

Use one of the PulseAudio .desktop files as a template and there should be no problem creating a menu entry for the Equalizer.

If this is solved please edit the title of the first post to reflect that, thanks  ;)

Have fun with the equalizer!

It should be able to use the LADSPA presets if you have them installed.

You should try Veromix widget ....  makes things very accessible.

;)

Will do.   Have to get on Hulu later too and see how/if  the volume
levels improved.   Need a new computer anyway, darn springs on
these USB ports.

Have a good one.

@Just17

The Pulse EQ has a GUI but doesn't do anything.

Veromix is for KDE I think, won't do anything on LXDE.

Qasmixer works fine, very happy with that.

The basic Pulse system is working OK, just the EQ won't do
anything.

Please advise.

The equaliser creates an alternate sound stream for each output device.

On the Playback Tab of PA Vol Control select the Equalised stream for the audio you wish to equalise.

You can alternate between Equalised and normal output streams there.

(Sorry, forgot you are using LXDE  :( )
