Can't make new Full Monty USB/DVD...
« on: September 09, 2012, 10:23:25 AM »
I installed the 2nd most recent version of Full Monty a few days ago by using LinuxLiveUSB creator to make the USB key. Now, when I select something on the bootloader from the 2012 FM usb, it just goes to a black screen with nothing happening at all. Next, I tried just extracting the ISO with 7-zip onto the drive. That didn't work either. Then, I tried making a DVD with CyberLink DVD Creator. That just brings me to a black screen with "boot:" If I type anything, it says "kernel 'whatever' not found." Now, I'm trying PEnDriveLinux's Universal USB Installer. The reason why I have to do this is because I have no internet on the other install (for whatever reason) and I can't update without that.

Any ideas about what I should use to make the LiveUSB?

I love me some Linux, but I used to think _Ubuntu was superior. That is, until after installing it on 4 machines I had to use my backup PCLinux USB to repair it 'cuz I tried a nightly build and it was @$$. Now, I keep an _Ubuntu LiveUSB key, a PCLinuxFM and Pheonix key, and a Win7 key. Just in case.

Unetbootin ?
exists for PCLinuxOS, Win and other distro's
Be sure to format your USB bootable FAT.

Do I understand this correctly? .......  the previous version booted OK on the PC but the newer ISO does not boot OK?

If so then delete the splash & quiet boot options and try again ......  you may see where it is failing.

Yes, you understand perfectly... but I have no idea how to do the second part, let alone what it is.

Also, I have more info on what it says:
The disc:
ISOLINUX 3.05 2010-02-28 ETCD Copyright (C) 1994-2010 H. Peter Anvin et al
gfxboot:

Initializing gfx code...
boot:
gfxboot:

(repeats)

The USB:
SYSLINUX 4.05 EDD 4.05-pre1 Copyright (C) 1994-2011 H. Peter Anvin et al
gfxboot:

Initializing gfx code...

_

(Stays like that, flashing cursor)

Also, I ran VirtualBox with both the disc as IDE and the USB as the IDE controller, and both booted fine; so I'm stumped. On the plus side, I got my internet to work on the old one, but I realized I can't install packages due to the lack of space. If only I could set it so packages install on the PC's hard drive . . .

And it was already FAT32 because that is default for bootable drives.

I can only address a USB key created with PCLinuxOS-LiveUSB creator.

You can edit the  /boot/grub/menu.lst file on the USB drive/stick to delete the splash=silent & quiet  boot options.

From your last post it might seem that you are not getting to the boot screen at all ----  the screen where you select to boot.

In that case try typing the following and pressing Enter

LiveCD

Well, I used UNetBootin to make a key, and successfully made it to the boot screen-however after the code, all I get is a black screen. This happened with LiveCD and with Install PCLinux. I guess I have to try fail safe and no splash.

Two problems there:
What's vesa?
Do you mean at that whole boot: thing or in the boot menu? Please be a little more specific with the question. (Don't yell at me if I sound like a doucher, it's just because I don't know if the start-up line is considered the thing before the boot menu or in the boot menu.)

Well, I guess I'll try all of my options here. I'll try the original two LiveCD/USBs I made and enter LiveCD at the "boot:" part. Second, I will try failsafe mode and no splash mode and also vesa on the Unetbootin one. Only problem with the Unetbootin one, is the boot loader. It's @$$.

Ok; the DVD started with the LiveCD line. However, it wouldn't even go to the boot loader, I just got my old friend the black screen.
Oh look, got it while I was typing this!
Anyway, I used the USB key after that, and tried Console to enter vesa or whatever, and the progress bar was hanging at the completed level, while the code just said "drakxtools_http"
Also, when trying everything else, I get the black screen when the progress bar is at about halfway, but I always forget to check the code at that point.

Oh, and I hit tab to 'edit options' and guess what I saw right at the end!? splash=silent
I deleted that, and... it didn't do anything. Now it's not there, and nothing changed.

I'm trying the safe boot now, will update.

Edit: Just realized, it shows "Welcome to PCLinuxOS 2012
Press I to enter interactive startup" after a few lines of code. Actually, after the setting up the union file system and then unmounting xxx and ooo.
Edit2: In safe mode, I didn't start drakx tool, but it then hung at nxserver.

Check the MD5sum against the downloaded ISO .....  you might have a corrupted download.

Forgot to say... I did that.
Twice.
And redownloaded.
From another source.
Twice.
So, yeah.
Every time, the md5sum checked out.

1. To create a live usb you could try the menu selection More Applications > Configuration > PCLinuxOS Live USB creator;
2. I get most disk burning success using GnomeBaker.

I've never had a completely black screen.

You appear to be getting much further in the boot sequence.

There might be something confusing the boot, so I would be inclined to leave it there, without interference, for 10 or 15 mins before I gave up on it ....  just in case it is something like that.

On the LiveUSB you should edit the boot stanzas in menu.lst to delete the  "quiet" and the "splash=silent" boot options.
Doing so will mean the boot is never hidden behind a graphic and you can observe progress.
If your hardware requires any special boot options they can be added here too.

On a LiveCD/DVD you will have to do that manually at each boot .....  byt hitting the Esc key at the boot screen, select OK, and then when presented with the list in non-graphic form, select the entry you wish to boot, press 'E' for edit, and select the fist line and press 'E' for edit again ........  you can now delete the boot options as above.
When done, press 'Enter' ...........  and then 'B' to boot with the changed boot stanza.

Yeah, I've left it overnight twice and usually for 2 or 3 hours.
With my Unetbootin key, it says "Press [Tab] to edit options", and I did that and everything you said about the boot stanza thing was there and I deleted spalsh=silent and quiet.
