I have determined (apparently) that this KDE crashing occurs after I have run BleachBit Root and BleachBit. Evidently there is some bug in these cleaning programs which causes this. Does anyone else have the same problem?

Just a thought - and you may well be closing them - but I've always found it better to run Bleachbit when all applications are closed as it can clean out temp/tmp files which may be needed by the application(s) still in use, hence the possibility of a crash

Never heard of it, could you include some further info; i.e., is MIB a popular movie  ;), and is the Theme in the PCLinuxOS Repos ?
Kindest of Regards,
Tony

I did a search in Synaptic and found neither the theme nor the movie.  :-[
Probably, have to look elsewhere...  ;)

I have the same thoughts, but BleachBit deletes Plasma cache, and you can not shut down or turn off the Plasma.  :)

I just installed EZSwitch. The Plymouth Theme I have installed on my computer is Default Plymouth Theme for PCLinuxOS 2010. Can you recommend another one in which I might not have this 'crashing' problem? I do wish to run both BleachBits after every session just before shutdown.

I can't recommend a Theme Lawrence. But look in Synaptic, "Plymouth Theme", and try a couple of the latter (2012) Themes, is a good place to start now you have EZSwitch.

From memory, as I use the Blue Dobie Theme, I copied the directory from before the KDE update, from a Backup, and replaced the 'Blue Dobie' theme Directory. It was just good luck. I wouldn't suggest doing that; a lot has changed in KDE. I can't remember exactly, but after doing so logging In, and Out was not taking me to a verbose page with a command prompt.

Personally I wouldn't run "both BleachBits after every session just before shutdown."
Why do you ?
It could be causing the odd behaviour you're experiencing. I only clean Firefox from the Normal User Bleachbit.
I have no trouble afterwards.
You can 'Preview' what will be deleted in Bleachbit also, which may give a clue to what files are causing instability.
1.) Install some NEW full Plymouth Themes and see if that fixes the Logging in and out.
2.) Try NOT cleaning with Bleachbit for a few sessions.

I'm no expert, it's just trial and error from my end  ;)

To be frank, I do not know just why I run both BleachBits just before shutdown. It is a habit, I guess, from doing it with another Linux distribution. I'm going to try not doing both for a while to see what happens. Then I may try running both of them at the beginning of each session.

I suppose I just like having a 'clean' computer. If someone can determine which of the System settings in BleachBit as root causes this problem (so that I can uncheck it), I hope he/she can post that information here.

By the way, on this same computer I had previously tried another distro which uses KDE (its name begins with a K and ends with a U) and KDE crashed all the time for no apparent reason (it apparently had nothing to do with BleachBit). I gave up on that distro. The KDE on PCLinuxOS seems to be much more stable. But it would be nice if the KDE people could correct this BleachBit anomaly.

I haven't yet tried any new Plymouth theme but I'll do so soon. Which, in your opinion, is the nicest?

Thanks for all the replies.

Lawrence

  • PCLinuxOS Phoenix Edition (Xfce Desktop)

Well, I've found a "solution" to my problem: I removed PCLinuxOS with KDE and installed PCLinuxOS "Phoenix Edition" (with Xfce desktop).

On other computers I own, I use variants of that "famous" Linux distribution (you know - the one that begins with U and ends with u).

I do not like the Unity desktop (though I'll admit that it is much better in the current version than it was in the previous one). I tried the KDE variant of that OS but I found that I did not like it either (it crashed all the time). Plus I could not customize the desktop the way I wanted.

So I tried the version which begins with X and ends with u: this version, using the Xfce desktop, is, in my opinion, almost ideal. I can configure the desktop any way I like with no restrictions.

Using the Xfce desktop with PCLinuxOS, I can do the same. With KDE in PCLinuxOS, though there are a myriad of configuration options, I could not get it exactly the way I wanted it. No such problem with Xfce. (And I like Thunar better than Dolphin. Just my opinion, of course.)

Mostly KDE seemed to crash in PCLinuxOS was when I ran both BleachBits. Someone asked why I would want to do that. Maybe I'm paranoid, but I want to do that just before I shut the computer down. I like to have a "clean" computer on start-up. But KDE also crashed (just once or twice) for no apparent reason (but it crashed much less frequently than it had when I used K-----u).

With the Xfce desktop ("Phoenix Edition"), I can run the BleachBits and there is no crash. As a matter of fact, in the three days I've been running this variant, I have had no crashes whatsoever, regardless of what I do.

I am slowly learning how to use PCLinusOS. I am getting to like it better than that "other" distro primarily for two reasons: (1) I need to have only one repository active (rather than the 16! repositories I need in the "other" distro) and (2) it is a "rolling release" so there is none of the "upgrading" every six months (which mostly works but sometimes doesn't).

So far, I have been able to use each and every Linux program (and one Windows program, under Wine) on PCLinuxOS that I use on that other distro.

I'm going to experiment further. I recommend the "Phoenix Edition" (with its superb Thunar file manager) and, especially, the Xfce desktop (which I regard as superior even to Gnome 2.32) wholeheartedly.

Just installed the 2012 KDE version on a Toshiba Portege without any hassles or error messages.

Will close this thread for now.
