<Solved>Can't Install Any OS To VB
« on: August 30, 2012, 09:46:03 PM »
I can't install any OS to VB. I upgraded to 4.1.20 (Non-OSE) thinking that might help but no luck. The biggest problem describing this is each different OS doesn't install for a different reason. The first two OSes aren't supported by this forum but I think the problem is VB so I'm posting here.

Gnome MMXII: Live CD (using Virtual CD from ISO on HD) worked fine but when I clicked "install" the installer opened for a few seconds then closed if I tried from Desktop. If I tried from boot menu it just booted into the live CD.

Gnome Zen: Thinking the Gnome MMXII download was bad I tried Gnome Zen (using Virtual CD from ISO on HD). This time the installer started but froze and everything went to black. In one attempt it actually froze the whole computer.

Latest Minime: Mouse doesn't work. When I click anything the icon clicked doesn't open and I loose the cursor. I have to click Host+I twice to get it back. MiniMe installed using Virtual CD.

Just for kicks I tried a three year old Live CD of Minime and it wouldn't even boot.

Host OS for VB is PCLOS KDE fully updated. I am using the non-OSE version of VB.

Try PC --> More Applications --> Emulators --> Get Oracle VM VirtualBox - VirtualBox Installer.

And that is how I got here. See the thread below this one. :) http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,108602.0.html

I really don't know what to say about your not being able to install an OS. I have numerous VM installations that installed without any issues. I even installed VBox in a VM, just to see what that might be like, and what limitations would be imposed. (You can't get a GUI desktop)

VMs installed with earlier VBox versions prompt to install the newest guest additions when booted, which is only a three  click deal.

How much physical RAM do you have on the host machine, and how much are you allocating for the VM? Have you ever run memtest on your RAM? Faulty RAM, or not enough, would be my first suspects.

Host machine has 2 GB of memory and I have never had any problem installing an OS before. Just suddenly started on my old install of VM so I wiped everything and did the fresh install. Honestly it is such a weird problem I didn't expect a solution but wanted to be sure I wasn't missing something obvious. For now I'm just going to mark this answered. Will try Memtest and if okay then the OSE version. Thanks for your replies.

There are no longer any distinctions between OSE and Non-OSE.  It is the same program, and there are extensions you can install that enable the features previously available in the Non-OSE (the default with getvirtualbox is to install this extension automatically).

Are you sure you're fully updated?

Sometimes VM won't run because the IO APIC isn't (or is)  enabled

Occasionally that can apply to the PAE/NX setting as well

And another is if the OS Version is (or isn't) set to 32bit OR 64bit

PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Sony Vaio SVE1513A4ESI Laptop, Intel Core i5, 2.6GHz, 6GB RAM, 750GB, 15.6" Intel HD Graphics 4000

It was the memory that was too low. I was just using the memory suggested by VB in the set up procedure for a new install. I  upped the virtual memory to 1Gb and install worked fine. Thanks all. For people with less then 3Gb of computer Ram there is probably a lower figure that will work without compromising your computer but I didn't test.
