I hit the same problem regularly .....  am not yet sure if it is some formatting in the PDFs that it will not show or what is the cause, because some PDFs do show in the browser.

Yes the PDF display is enabled in plugins here.

Mostly I just copy the URL and open with Firefox  :(

It is enabled.  I have tried disabling it and using the Adobe Reader plugin. No joy.
I have completely uninstalled Adobe and Chrome and reinstalled chrome.  No joy.

I don't appear to be able to open any PDFs at present ....  or at least any I have tried today  :(

/usr/lib/chromium-browser/libpdf.so

is dated 26th Aug .....  I guess it is likely that since then I have been having problems ......

is that on or about the same time as the update of chromium?

do think adobe doesn't work with chromium.. the pdf reader in chromium is its own plugin ?

libpdf is Google's own implementation of a PDF renderer. While compatible, it is currently only part of Chrome releases, not Chromium ones.  So, when PC Linux OS users update chromium-browser, the corresponding libpdf.so is not updated at the same time.

Here is the solution: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Chromium#Open_PDF_files_inside_Chromium

kparts should allow pdfs to be rendered in Chromium, according to that page, but even after a reinstall of Kpartsplugin Chromium still fails to show PDF files  :(

To use KParts Plugin, install kpartsplugin. The plugin should be able, among other things, to open PDF files inside Chromium using an embedded Okular instance.

I got it working by adding to extensions, as a work around.
Save as PDF

I can now read or save pdf's in Chrome

Actually, the part of the instructions that worked for me was to download the proper .deb file, extract the libpdf.so and copy it to the /user/lib/chromium folder.

After a couple of false starts with incorrect files, I eventually got the correct libpdf.so file and all is working again now.

This is the file I used in case anyone else wants it.

I renamed the existing file in /usr/lib/chromium-browser/ and dropped in this one. Restarted Chromium and all is well so far.
