No sound in Live CD or after Install
« on: September 07, 2012, 08:48:54 PM »
Hi all,

I am getting no sound at all after installing minime 12.08. I thought it could be the HDMI from my new GTX 580, but I have installed pulse audio and disabled it in Pulse Audio Volume Control.

Intel G850
Gigabyte H61M S2PV
Nvidia GTX 580

Does anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks

Dave

Hi Dave. I'm not familiar with the Minime version, but I'd first try with alsamixer in a terminal. Check the volume level in all the devices, and also the presence of MM ("mute"). If everything looks fine, then you could try alsaconf, which will attempt to set up your sound card.
On my laptop, when having sound problems, I'd run alsaconf and it'd display a message saying that it couldn't detect the sound card, so I'd try one of the legacy ones that it suggests and problem solved.
Hope it helps...

Thanks for the reply - I tried both. alsamixer shows my internal card (as the HDMI has been disabled) with volume at 100%. Still, no sound. Any other ideas?

With Alsamixer you need to be sure to select the correct soundcard to display as many controls as it can show

I suggest Qasmixer from the repo .....  in this you can select on top right what to display.
It has lots of extra functions too ......  worth exploring.

You may find that some other level is low .....  maybe PCM or some of the Front/Rear/etc volume levels which are affecting things.
Boost each in turn while playing an audio track.

I started experiencing sound issues this weekend and read through a number of the threads about loss of sound and the relationship with pulse-audio.

Just wanted to post my experience in case it helps someone that I saw a post suggesting removing phonon-vlc in Synaptic and replacing it with phonon-gstreamer, and THAT solved MY problem.
