I ran the cat command as root on a USB memory stick instead of a text file.  Now the terminal has been scrolling all kinds of weird characters for over an hour now.  Is there any way to stop this without messing something up?  Can I simply close out the session?

press "ctrl+c". Thats how you stop a program running from the terminal.

you could also open "system guard" and close the application from there.

you could also just close the terminal window.

run "sync" command first before doing anything.

"cat" command just read stuff, it doesnt write and hence cant damage data on the device.

Thanks a million, muungwana. "CTL+c" didn't work.  Had to just close the session.

Thanks again,
