Fracking attributed as cause of minor earthquakes in northern British Columbia

A probe by the B.C. Gas and Oil Commission has determined that recent seismic activity in northeast B.C is caused by fracking which has been carried out in the area.

Exploration licences have been issued here - to an Aus corporation I believe - and they will be looking for drilling licences soon.

This sounds like a serious matter, so I'll steer clear of the Battlestar Galactica references for now.

Hydraulic Fracturing is a controversial process at best, and has only become economical at the obscenely high prices a barrel of crude oil fetches these days...

It's really too bad that government is not really interested in fostering alternative energy.  They call it "green energy" because their cronies and special interests rake in all the green and we get no new energy sources from it of any consequence.

Lockheed Martin is doing more for alternative energy right now with their OTEC research than Solyndra or any other so-called "green energy" company, but hardly anyone hears about that in the press.

grumble... worthless politicians... a pox on both their houses... grumble.

Oh?  Where was I?  Yeah... Fracking.  There's a lot of NIMBY about fracking, and a lot of sensationalist press about it, so it's hard to know what the truth is without doing some real digging past the BS and even then it's not easy to sort it all out.  I hope the proper environmental impact studies are done, and that all is done with proper regard for the lives of folks in the area before any hydraulic fracturing commences.  Emotions tend to run high, especially when folks believe that fracking can cause earthquakes.

There's little doubt in my mind that hydraulic fracturing causes damage, but the truth probably lies somewhere between the two extremes which are now contending for the public's support.  Both sides have hidden agendas, and hidden motives, and that will make any public debate on the issue less than healthy and less than pleasant.

I hope your communities get what they want - you are the folks who have to live with the decisions.

The Government today gave the green light for “fracking” to resume across the UK – potentially allowing for gas exploration to take place across 60 per cent of the country.

Well, to answer a speculative question such as you have posed, it would probably be best to review past UK government reaction, in the context of how ordinary folk have been helped out after their livelihood, wealth or property have been affected by commercial or political events outside their influence.

You could Google something like "Sellafield", or perhaps "Equitable Life" to see how the UK government aids ordinary people when things go wrong.
