KDE4 Full Monty Internet Problems
« on: September 07, 2012, 04:54:17 AM »
So, I extracted the ISO onto an 8GB flash drive, and then booted from it and installed the OS onto my 16GB flash drive. So far, everything works EXCEPT for the internet. It shows I am connected to wifi and I also have an ethernet cable connected.  However, no web page loads and if I click monitor, it shows 2 B/S for sent and received and that's on good days.
Yes, my internet works fine because I am on the same computer booted into Windows typing this.
My PC is an HP p6510y. The flash drive is a PNY Atache 16GB.
PC Specs: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c02174835&lang=en&cc=us&taskId=101&contentType=SupportFAQ&prodSeriesId=4162263&prodTypeId=12454

I suppose you will ask me to show the output of a few commands; that will take me a while. Not that I don't know how to use it, just that I have to take a screenshot and all, you know. The whole dual boot thing

EDIT: Not even a guess? I've never seen a post with no replies before on this forum.

I love me some Linux, but I used to think _Ubuntu was superior. That is, until after installing it on 4 machines I had to use my backup PCLinux USB to repair it 'cuz I tried a nightly build and it was @$$. Now, I keep an _Ubuntu LiveUSB key, a PCLinuxFM and Pheonix key, and a Win7 key. Just in case.

Have you tried removing and then recreating a new net connection via

PCC (Configure Your Computer)  Network & Internet > Set Up a New Network Interface.... ?

Not sure but it may be worth rebooting after the removal process and then add the new one.

Also, have you checked your firewall in case that's blocking you?

And have you tried using "ping" ?

Please try this.

Open a web browser and then try to goto http://findmoore.net

Do you see a web page or not? If you do not see a web page then try going to http://66.112.77.219

Now do you see a web page?  If you do that means you have a DNS issue and need to set or check the DNS that you are using. If you still do not see a webpage, then in a console window type in the following

netstat -r

copy and paste the results here.

@ GRSteelers
This post in simply to inform you what I do when I have a problem, which is most of the time.
--I hover my mouse pointer over the green netapplet icon in the taskbar.
--It shows the absolute correct IP address.
--I right-click , go up the menu and < disconect >
--window pops up for password...give it.....icon stays green
--Again, right-click , go to top, click again......the icon changes to red
--again, right-click, go to top, click again...the icon change to green and .........>
--I have a connection.

It's not PCLinuxOS related ( in my case), but more likely KDE4 or Hardware

Just try this and see what happens. Maybe it helps thinking ahead

as in what direction we are moving.

Thank you all for the replies, I will get back to you shortly with the results.

-Gavin

EDIT: Oh yeah, just got a reply that the version I have cannot be updated without internet so I have to do a clean reinstall. Then, I will come back with results.

Thanks again for the help. I love me some Linux, but I used to think Ubuntu was superior. That is, until after installing it on 4 machines I had to use my backup PCLinux Live USB I made to repair it because I tried a nightly build and it was @$$. It was version 12 in alpha stages. I guess I learned my lesson. Now, I keep an Ubuntu LiveUSB key, a PCLinux KDE4 LiveUSB key, a PCLinux KDE LiveUSB key, and a Windows 7 LiveUSB key, just in case. You all know how it goes. (I think I'm gonna make that my signature.)

GRSteelers I'm not sure if you got your problem solved, but I had an observation that might be useful.
I recently was having wireless connection trouble with a Dell laptop. So I connected a lan cable & disabled the wireless. Got a connection. After a restart both lan & wireless were active & no connection. I had to disable the wireless before the lan would connect, even though I got a "connected" icon in the systray. Made sense when I thought about it. Maybe you tried that, but I didn't notice it in your post.

So, I extracted the ISO onto an 8GB flash drive, and then booted from it and installed the OS onto my 16GB flash drive.

If you are using a full install on a flash drive I hope you have made whatever adjustments are necessary to reduce the wear on the drive.

I would go into PCC -  Network & Internet .......  and delete ALL connections.

When all are removed reboot; back into PCC and set up the wireless again.

When you say necessary adjustments, what would you mean... I have no /home partition, just swap and "/." I use the 1TB drive in the PC for storage, mainly. It has 4GB of ram as well.

No doubt there are posts on the forum about it, but the main one would be to limit the writes to the device to avoid unnecessary wear.

The mount options should include one to limit this ........  noatime or relatime or such.

There are likely others too, but I have not installed to a flash drive so never got very familiar with those.

Thanks--I have heard that using flash memory for RAM/swap can shorten the life, because it's only rated for a certain amount of read/writes. I know the swap partition is supposed to be twice the ram, but I only did 1GB instead of 8. Hopefully, that will limit the writes to it. I also noticed that there is never any use of the swap anyway, based on the CPU monitor.

I was not referring to the swap partition, but to the OS .......  whether on one /  partition or divided into  /  &   /home

The writes should be limited to those ......  else undue wear can shorten the life of the flash drive.

Eh, the flash drive was only $15 and PCLinux is free. :)

Have you tried removing and then recreating a new net connection

Tried this a few times and it worked! Thanks a lot.
Now I just have to get the new version.
