[SOLVED] Synaptic - Verify package signatures

I did a fresh install from 2012.08. When I install packages, during the confirmation dialog the "Verify package signatures" box is not checked by default as I remember it to be.

1. What is the role of this option? Is it important to be checked?
2. Has it actually changed, or is it something I used to do / did now that has resulted in this changed behaviour?

I don't think PCLinuxOS has ever used package signatures
